Everyone I know still calls it shootout except for a few old timers who simply call it "the OU game"

I wonder how our O-line would do against one of them. . .

because media decided "shootout" was triggering

I thought it was because the football at the two schools has gotten so soft that shootout just didn’t fit anymore.

I've never heard anyone I know call it the Red River Rivalry or Shootout.. it was always universally called "the OU Texas game"

It would be more appropriate for Grambling v Prairie View to be called the Shootout now if we’re being honest

Eh, given the neighborhood surrounding the stadium, shootout probably needed to go. I’m half surprised it’s still named the Cotton bowl tbh

I only know of the Red River Shootout. When did the name change??

It was changed to keep sponsor dollars flowing.

It was the SBC Red River Rivalry

Then the AT&T Red River Showdown

Then it was the Allstate Red River Rivalry

It might have been in response to the fatal shooting death of an OU student in downtown Dallas on the Friday night before the 1992 game.

The incident led to the end of the Commerce Street shenanigans that used to be considered a right of passage for people attending the game.

It’s literally not Rivalry Week. It’s still October. That’s crazy work using Rivalry Week on that. That’s my only critique on that advertisement.

What began as a night of fun before a rivalry football game between Oklahoma University and the University of Texas in 1992, turned into the most violent weekend Dallas had seen during the annual OU-Texas revelry. On Oct. 9, college football fans took to downtown Dallas to visit bars and peruse Commerce Street while enjoying a drink and taunting fans of the opposing team. It wasn't until after 11 p.m. when shots rang out after an argument ensued from a fender bender and 19-year-old Carrolton resident Thomas Crump was fatally shot. Other occurrences of violence were reported across downtown. The incidents led the city of Dallas to reconsider its public drinking laws, which traditionally allowed people to openly drink outside during the weekend of the rivalry game. In the following year, around 800 police officers were spread across the downtown area, Commerce Street sidewalks were closed off and public drinking was banned

quote:

Police said Mr. Crump was shot at the corner of Houston and Commerce streets shortly after 11 p.m. Friday. Mr. Crump, who was riding in the bed of a truck, was shot in the chest after a minor traffic accident involving the truck and another vehicle. He later died at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

one correction needs to be made though... Not an OU student...\

CRUMP
TOMMY JUSTIN, 19, passed away at Parkland Memorial Hospital on Friday evening. He was born on May 29, 1973 in Dallas. He was a 1991 graduate of Newman Smith High School and currently a student at Brookhaven Community College. He was employed with Don Morgan Boots in Mesquite.
