Newsflash: Newbies from the Big 12 don't have any historical SEC rivals and quite frankly don't get much say in the category of protecting SEC tradition. The only reason we are having to make these decisions is because we opened the door for you charity cases in the first place.

Arkansas & Lsu are.

LSU has historical rivalries with Alabama and Ole Miss that predate anything they might have had the past few seasons with A&M.... there was a time when LSU-Ole Miss was quite a a big deal.

As for Arkansas, its a trophy game and while not very important to LSU, it seems somewhat of a big deal for Arkansas.

The main thing is to make sure that each program gets to continue playing their biggest rival annually, whether the rank of that rivalry is reciprocated by the other team or not.

The only reason we have divisions now is because the NCAA has a rule that in order to play a conference championship game, a conference has to have equal-sized divisions inside which all teams play eachother during a season... that or you can have no divisions at all, but all teams have to play eachother (like the current Big 12 does now).

But now that the NCAA is basically irrelevant, I say just tell the NCAA we're doing what we want whether they like it or not.

The format would be this:

*9 game SEC schedules
*Each team has 3 annual opponents so that rivalry games are protected
*Each team plays 6 rotating opponents per season.

This would mean in each 4-year period, each team would play each rotating opponent twice, once at home and once on the road.

The standings would go 1-16. The Top 2 teams would meet in the Championship.

Yep, I have been on this mantra from the start as my preferred new scheduling format.

If Divisions with MIZZOU to the West and Bama and Auburn to the East I will accept it.

LSU should not agree to any permanent arrangement that takes UF off the schedule. Period.

The three route seems to be more fair in that there would be more rotation rather than a school having Bama, OU, LSU, and UGA every year.

Exactly. If you have 5 permanent opponents, there isn't enough rotation which then causes there to be a huge disparity in SOS.

I like the pods idea. That said, can’t wait to see Alabama’s cake “bridge schedule” the first year or two of the new format.

Ok, then if it is 3 permanent opponents (which is what all of the speculation currently is), what other 2 opponents would you want? I assume aTm would be one, so it would come down to Bama or OM. Would you rather play UF over Bama or OM?

Why would anybody have that combination of teams in the rotation?

I think based on past performance and potential that we can pretty easily split the SEC into two groups:

Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Georgia
Ole Miss, Miss State, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt

Give each team three permanent opponents from their “in” group and two from their “out” group. For instance LSU might get Florida, Alabama, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Ole Miss. Auburn gets Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss and Miss State or somesuch. Alabama gets LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, Miss State and maybe one of the new Big 12 teams.
It’s not going to be perfectly balanced, and depending on how you view the Big 12 teams especially, it might seem off. But it’ll work itself out.

There is literally the exact same rotation. You play everyone in the conference every two years. The difference is that instead of another irrelevant OOC game everybody hates, you get another SEC game, and you don’t have teams like LSU deciding which of Florida, Alabama, Texas A&M and Ole Miss hits the cutting room floor.

If I had to select for LSU, I would go with UF, OM, and A&M.

I love the Bama game, but let’s be honest, the storyline there really is Saban.

With LSU and UF, there is legitimate hate there where I don’t see that with LSU/Bama. That’s starting to feel a bit contrived.

I can see it now: LSU demands not to lose any of its biggest rivalries, so the SEC gives them Alabama, Florida, and Texas A&M.

LSU fails to win the SEC anymore, and they blame it on the grand conspiracy that is their difficult SOS compared to others.

Of course you like this as you dont have to play Bama every year in the regular season. The annual opponents is stupid - none of the yearly games are what they used to be, time to send them to the scrap yard.

I have stressed the concept of expansion and maintaining the traditional what I call "non-negotiable" rivals and other in-state rival games.

As someone over 50, the 4 historic rival games that impacted all scheduling since 1st expansion in 1992 are, in no particular order:

1)Bam/Auburn
2)UGA/AUburn
3_Florida/UGA
4)Bama/TENN

2 new non-negotiables in new SEC

5) Texas/OU
6) Texas/Texas A&M

two in-state rival games that must be played

7) MSU/Ole Miss
8) TENN/Vandy

LSU does not have any of those 8 historic rivals or in-state rivals.

3 team permanent allows you to play all of those 8 games and preserve other games that have some aspects of rival game.

So using the concept of "rival", the 3 teams that LSU has that are closest to rivals are Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Florida. All 3 teams and significant % of their fans would rate LSU as their #2 most important game. There is a significant % of LSU fans who view them the same way, although older generation (Ole Miss) newer ones Texas A&M.

So LSU's 3 under the rival criteria should be:

LSU: Texas A&M, Florida, and Ole Miss

I would think for other schools for example would be:

Texas A&M; TX/LSU/Arkansas
Arkansas: Texas A&M, Texas and Ole Miss
Ole Miss; MSU/LSU/Arkansas

You could fill in 2 games easily for several teams

Bama: Auburn/TENN
Auburn: Bama/UGA
Florida: UGA/LSU
UGA: Auburn/Florida
OU: Texas/Mizzou
Vandy: TENN/SCAR maybe MIZZOU or UK
UK: MIZZOU/MSU
