The only reason we have divisions now is because the NCAA has a rule that in order to play a conference championship game, a conference has to have equal-sized divisions inside which all teams play eachother during a season... that or you can have no divisions at all, but all teams have to play eachother (like the current Big 12 does now).

But now that the NCAA is basically irrelevant, I say just tell the NCAA we're doing what we want whether they like it or not.

The format would be this:

*9 game SEC schedules
*Each team has 3 annual opponents so that rivalry games are protected
*Each team plays 6 rotating opponents per season.

This would mean in each 4-year period, each team would play each rotating opponent twice, once at home and once on the road.

The standings would go 1-16. The Top 2 teams would meet in the Championship.

Add a 10th game and go to 5 permanent opponents. Your concept is fundamentally right, but with five permanent opponents, nothing important gets left on the table at all.

I would assume you would look at the head-to-head result, if that doesn't apply, record vs. common conference opponents.

Would need computers to model it out to make sure all scenarios were covered... but I assume you'd choose the Top 2 teams this way:

1. Conference Record
2. Head-to-head between teams that are tied
3. If teams did not play, then record vs. top team, then next best team, etc. until you get tie-breaker.

Oklahoma & Ole Miss aren't our rivals.

Arkansas & Lsu are.

I am all for this model but you can't go 1-3 when a team has 3 clear opponents it matches up with.

That would be a huge built-in advantage for UK.

I mean, would it really matter?

I prefer pods with permanent cross pod rivals, but this could work.

Hell, with the way this is all going, eventually the SEC could swallow up the best of the rest. Get this think to 32 teams and treat it like the EPL table. Each year bottom 4 teams get relegated to the lower league, top 4 of the lower league get promoted to the SEC.

As an example, here would be Alabama's schedule for the first 4 seasons (not in official order of play, just focus on the teams):

2022: Auburn, at Tennessee, at LSU, Vanderbilt, at Florida, Missouri, Georgia, at Miss St., Texas A&M

2023: at Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, at Vanderbilt, Florida, at Missouri, at Georgia, Mississippi St., at Texas A&M

2024: Auburn, at Tennessee, at LSU, at Arkansas, Oklahoma, at Kentucky, at S. Carolina, Ole Miss, at Texas

2025: at Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, at Oklahoma, Kentucky, S. Carolina, at Ole Miss, Texas

Then repeat.

The three route seems to be more fair in that there would be more rotation rather than a school having Bama, OU, LSU, and UGA every year.

Either works but someone is going to get screwed with 5 it seems.

bottom 4 teams get relegated

I don't follow soccer in the slightest, but I do think that relegation would be an interesting concept for college football.

I always sort of pictured it as a P5 to G5 type of deal, especially if G5 teams are left out of the playoff structure at some point.

We already play MSU annually now and TN is our closest opponent and has always been our rival. Instead of Miz, I would much rather see SC or FL added on, just because there's a bit more history between the teams. I get hyped up for both of these games every year and would be pretty disappointed to see them leave our schedule

This is what I was thinking:

TU – OU, AR, aTm
OU – TU, AR, Mizzou
aTm – LSU, TU, MSU
AR – Mizzou, TU, OU
Mizzou – AR, OU, UK
LSU – aTm, OM, Bama
OM – LSU, MSU, Vandy
MSU – OM, UK, aTm
Bama – AU, UT, LSU
AU – Bama, UGA, UF
Vandy – UT, OM, USCe
UT – Vandy, Bama, UF
UK – Mizzou, USCe, MSU
UGA – AU, UF, USCe
USCe – UGA, UK, Vandy
UF – UGA, AU, UT

Or if UT would rather play UK over UF:

TU – OU, AR, aTm
OU – TU, AR, Mizzou
aTm – LSU, TU, MSU
AR – Mizzou, TU, OU
Mizzou – AR, OU, UK
LSU – aTm, OM, Bama
OM – LSU, MSU, Vandy
MSU – OM, UK, aTm
Bama – AU, UT, LSU
AU – Bama, UGA, UF
Vandy – UT, OM, USCe
UT – Vandy, Bama, UK
UK – Mizzou, USCe, MSU
UGA – AU, UF, USCe
USCe – UGA, UF, Vandy
UF – UGA, AU, USCe

Or if aTm really wants to play AR:

TU – OU, AR, aTm
OU – TU, MSU, Mizzou
aTm – LSU, TU, AR
AR – Mizzou, TU, aTm
Mizzou – AR, OU, UK
LSU – aTm, OM, Bama
OM – LSU, MSU, Vandy
MSU – OM, UK, OU
Bama – AU, UT, LSU
AU – Bama, UGA, UF
Vandy – UT, OM, USCe
UT – Vandy, Bama, UF
UK – Mizzou, USCe, MSU
UGA – AU, UF, USCe
USCe – UGA, UK, Vandy
UF – UGA, AU, UT
