Because in college baseball is third banana to football and basketball...especially down south and even at the LSU's of the conference that have enjoyed massive success in the sport.
Several college football coaching positions bring a similar level of prestige as their pro counterparts. Even Basketball. But very rarely if ever is a college baseball coach going to be a household name. If you want that you've gotta get to the show.

I’m very happy for him and I’d take a pay cut to accept that job as well. Are you kidding me? He already won a title in college and I’m sure managing an MLB team has been a dream of his.
Good for Tony. He’ll never get his shite pushed in by LSU again.

He is going to face LSU again in 3 years as Dave Van Horns replacement at Arkansas

I don’t know how he’s going to manage only clearing a few mill per year after taxes.

With the downward trend of his team, I wonder if he was worried about being able to sustain the level of success he had at Tennessee and damaging his reputation if he stayed too long.

Running away from LSU to go head to head with

He just took one of 30 MLB jobs with one of the 5-10 best organizations in the sport. This is what we call moving up in the profession.

No disrespect to going to work at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, but Oracle Park is a beautiful venue. And it's MLB...he doesn't have to play third banana to football and basketball.

With the quasi-pro, shite rules in place in college athletics, I don't blame anyone for taking an opportunity to coach at the highest level of his/her sport.

That says it all. I thought it, but didn’t know if I should believe it. Now I do.
I hate that it was at the expense of the great fans of the Tennessee Volunteers.

Just rip the band aid off and hire a real candidate.
They tried that with the west coast guys and it bit them in the arse.
They should hire Little Rock or the Murray St. guy.

He couldn’t handle LSU’s Johnson.

He's about to get the "Nick Saban" lesson regarding pros vs college.

Chris Low just reported this is false btw. Getting a significant raise.
