Everyone in admissions knows they're bullshite but they fricking live for the USNews rankings. It's by far the best marketing a school or program can get

Ole Miss and State not being able to set their own entrance requirements is a joke. Not sure if State is the same but when I was at OM the first 2-3 semesters were made to be a little more difficult to weed out the students (of all races) that had no business being there. I had someone in my Comp 1 class ask the professor what a thesis statement was. That's 7th grade shite.
The College of Engineering has stricter admissions requirements, but if you want to be an engineer and don't meet the requirements they admit you as undeclared with a "pre-engineering" focus.
We're talking about students who haven't even taken algebra or physics, trying to get an engineering degree, and all they're doing is adding years onto their degree trying to catch back up in Math and Science.

Really depended on the major. It’s astonishing at the students that believe you just show up at class, type random stuff on your laptop, and out comes this gradient function curve that can answer anything in the world.
Accounting was kind of a lure in major. Everything was fun and games till Intermediate I and II. That weeded out the chaff.

The one ranking I really hate is this is the best city to live in, quit saying that about the red states. Say that about the blue states you praise.

This is the off-season thread that other off-season threads don’t invite to parties.

I think the lists are bullshite, but for Alabama it is also an indication to some future problems. With 60% of the student body being from out of State, they are having to take some marginal students from inside the State. They are getting some pushback from the citizens/politicians of the State over these numbers and are offering those marginal students some money to keep the numbers at least tolerable. It is unsustainable and it is going to force the Administration to choose size or quality.

That is not true at all. Bama is getting quality in-state students, just not as much as we used to. We are actually increasing our in-state student enrollment as well as recruiting high stat out of state students. The quality of our students have only increased every year; while at the same time, our rankings have dropped like a stone. So to me, these rankings mean jack sh*% because I can actually see the quality of students we are producing.

Need to ask HS Counselor's in Alabama. UA has gone after higher scores from out of state to make up for the instate issues. They are using scholarships as the draw.

Rankings all vary from one compiler to another...Princeton Review and Carnegie Mellon Institute rankings are more highly regarded than USN&WR and Forbes, but all of them are just merely a guide and not scientific. They also change from year to year.
Also, there's little difference in the academic quality of schools ranked in the top 20, per experts who compile these things.

I'm not saying that wasn't our goal 4 years ago, because it was. I'm saying now we have changed our strategy to get more in-state students and I believe it is slowly working. We've only started this plan about 3 years ago so it will take some time.

LSU should rank higher in both rankings.

Notice the only ones complaining are the schools low in the rankings. LOL at those schools.

Read that UA was going to try and reduce OOS enrollment and still maintain overall numbers. The State just doesn't produce numbers of quality students for that to happen. Besides Auburn, UAH and UAB have upped their game the last 10 years.

These “rankings” are always so ridiculously biased.
