my take on Alabama's title claim is along the lines that if the Little Sisters of the Poor had a poll and made them national champion, they'd claim it...
if LSU claimed the number of National Championships that Alabama did, we'd have several more (1908 and some in the 1930's)

If Alabama claimed the way they’re accused of, there would be more than 18. Regardless, Alabama still has more than anyone. So I don’t get the big deal over the argument.
