Hell, if you want to be pissed off at someone for Alabama winning a share of the 1978 title, get mad at Oklahoma. Sooners were #1 in both polls until an upset loss to Nebraska in November. Sooners losing late in the season opened the door for USC and Alabama. Hell, be mad at Penn State as well for being #1 going into their game vs. Alabama before losing.
1973 UPI national champion Alabama lost to eventual AP national champion Notre Dame in what could be dubbed as a de-facto AP national championship game. And if you think Alabama didn’t care about winning the game, check the score. Alabama wanted it all. Still, they get a share. Whether legit to you or not, it’s hard to argue against the most prestigious hardware of the time period.

To help make Alabama’s claim to the 1978 AP title it does.

At the time, UPI “crowned” their champion before the bowl loss. Therefore Alabama’s national championship claim in 1973 was the result of an undefeated season by the selector’s standard.
You need to be more knowledgeable on your national championship history in college football.
