A large blue catfish would be more fitting, although given State’s work with the catfish industry, maybe not. How about the Mississippi Sturgeons?

The Mississippi Steamers....the boll weevils....Deltas....governors...Paddle Wheels...stern wheelers.....the freshwater...muddy waters....ragin river....the barges...sand banks...crop dusters....my personal favorite..the Trash Pandas name of Huntsville's minor league team. Then there is always the "MISSISSIPPI SQUIRRELS!"

That will be perfect then Katrina victims and those of us who flooded in 2016 will have something to cry about as well. I’ve been needing something to be offended about.

They can compromise & drop either Ole Miss or Rebels. Not both. One or the other.

Man that’s tough. “Mississippi Rebels” works for athletics.

University of Mississippi works academically. If there was a compromise to be made it’s that going forward they go by University of Mississippi or Mississippi Rebs for athletics

I could never keep up w/ the changes. Rebs? Black Bears? Land Sharks? I don't think that the bears went over too well.

As others have mentioned about sharks in the Mississippi they could change to the Mississippi River Sharks and keep the same mascot.

Ole Miss isn't the only school with Rebels as their mascot. You have the UNLV Runnin Rebels. Just keep the damn name or raise amock about UNLV needing to change their name as well

Did not know this. Would be appropriate considering recent flooding events the past few years #finishthepumps

1927 devastated the Delta region of Mississippi which was then even more overwhelmingly black than it is today,

I’m not sure about that. The Delta towns 40-50 years ago were way more white then than now. Population has been declining for years and most of it is White flight. Not sure about the 1920s but I know the 60s-70s it was closer to 50/50 everywhere but now it’s more like 25-75 in favor of black

In all seriousness, Ole Miss will become University of Mississippi exclusively, but since Mississippi is a Native American name, maybe that gets changed too.

If the Rebel is gone (which we all know it’s gone), then the only protest proof way to release a new name is hiring an all black committee comprised of civil rights activists.

Whatever they come up with, you gotta accept.
