Until the 50s/60s, news media was still predominantly a northeastern institution that hadn’t regionalized away from biases. NCAA also still controlled tv broadcasting so the alma maters of writers and the favored schools (Notre Dame, Army, etc) routinely were given benefit of the doubt in voting processes due to lack of being able to adequately judge teams other than by in person attendance, regional radio, or the written and spoken word of other reporters.
All to say, CFB title until around the 60s and 70s are more or less made up and pointless. Hell, Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame routinely sat out the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl etc after the regular season wrapped. The concept of. A national title mattered to an extent but not nearly as much as it has the past 50 years

Stetson deserves it. Herschel had his retired way before he graduated.

So two 8-4 teams that didn't finish the season ranked?
Notre Dame would have happened after the award so it can't be counted.
South Carolina did play a tougher schedule and the other guy who won had more yards than Herschel.
Just not really seeing the argument. Weaker schedule and less yards.

Texas has six. I support these and would not add any until a player wins several awards.
All are in the College Football Hall of Fame except McCoy, who is on the 2027 ballot. Listing one major award and if the player was a national champion:
Tommy Nobis: #60 - Maxwell, national champ
Bobby Layne: #22 - impressive four-time All-Southwest Conference since Freshman didn't get to play in that era. (He did because of WW2.) Also missed roughly half a season due to WW2 (as a Merchant Marine).
Ricky Williams: #34 - Heisman
Earl Campbell: #20 - Heisman
Vince Young: #10 - Maxwell, national champ
Colt McCoy: #12 - Maxwell

And since you referenced "based on his performance", all of UGA's wins were based on Herschel Walker's performance. He was the offense.
Roger's had more rushing yards on more rushing attempts.
Herschel actually had more all purpose yards. And he didn't fumble away games.

Yeah, that 1 extra all purpose yard is a huge deal.
Rogers had more rushing yards, more carries and more yards per carry.
He did it against a much tougher schedule and every game he played he had over 100 yards, while Herschel had many games where he didn't manage 100 yards and a game where he was injured and did much of nothing(so much for "all of UGA's wins")
And do you really want to bring up fumbles given the Herschel had 3 in a single game the next year?

Here are the available numbers, Seniors pick first, then Juniors and on. Returning players of course keep their number if they want. Simple, no need for duplicates.

Georgia was Herschel left. Herschel right. And Herschel up the middle on offense. Watch the Tennessee game when Herschel sat the first half. He was literally the best player in football that year. He was literally the most valuable player on the best team. He literally won the national championship on his legs as his shoulder was dislocated against the best run defense in the nation (confirming what we saw the previous 11 games).
George Rogers admits that Herschel was the best running back that he ever saw. And he saw him in 1980.

The best player on the best team led the undefeated season in college football.

You see the game by game highlights where he looks superhuman.

Georiga/Walker did not play a single team that finished ranked the entire season.
South Carolina played like 3 or 4.
And he still had more yards than Herschel and a higher YPC.
Walker finished 3rd that year.
I think you're applying what Walker did over his career to his freshman year and coming to a different conclusion. Instead, you should look at it from the perspective of just history up to that point. In which you have a freshman RB playing against a bunch of unranked teams vs a guy with history playing against better teams and having better numbers.
