Wait. So UGA is suing this kid for the full ammount, but only paid out $30k.

According to ESPN, Wilson signed a contract that included a buyout fee if he left Georgia. From ESPN-- "The deal states that if Wilson withdrew from the Georgia team or entered the transfer portal, he would owe the collective a lump-sum payment equal to the rest of the money he'd have received had he stayed for the length of the contract."

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems pretty straightforward, if ESPN's reporting is accurate, that Wilson owes more than the $30K.

If Wilson wanted to transfer, fine, but it's weird that he would sign a binding contract then only a few weeks later, expect to walk away from it with zero repercussions.

Good. There needs to be some consequences that the kids have to weigh.

The best part of this is that Missouri will indirectly be paying UGA the negotiated amount and fines.

That is unless they crawfish on their deal with Wilson. I could certainly see Drunk doing that.

Exactly. Unless Georgia tricked or manipulated Wilson into signing the contract, or forced him at gunpoint, I don't see how Georgia is the bad guy here. Wilson is the one who signed a binding contract to stay at Georgia, knowing there were consequences if he left.

The best part will be laughing at the Georgia poors. I also doubt you guys win this if it goes to court. Cheers though for the try.

So Georgia shouldn't enforce the stipulations of the contract that Wilson signed?? How else are these professional athletes going to learn that signing a binding contract means something?? If Wilson walks away from another binding contract, this time with Missouri, the athletic department should just roll over and let him do it?

Good for UGA, and good for contract case law precedent. As for CFB, one more step down the pathway to it being just a business.

I personally compare this situation to the MLB draft and minor league system..

When a player agrees to sign on and accepts a signing bonus up front, the franchise technically protects that interests by controlling that player's development and playing time until he becomes eligible to become a free agent.

If a baseball rookie walks away from a minor league club, they simply can't walk over to another franchise of their choice. They off course could be traded, but the initial franchise doesn't totally lose out on their original investment.

The problem is they are using "liquidating damages" to collect $390,000 from a player who was only paid $30,000 overall and technically they aren't paying players to play but for their "likeness" in advertising and media. Classic City signed over those rights to Georgia athletic department. I don't see how Georgia Athletic department lost $390,000 in damages to the brand since there really was no damage to the brand. Especially since Georgia routinely signs more scholarship players than they have room for then cuts them.

It gets worse for Wilson too. Allegedly Mizzou gave his family the money to repay UGA and they chose not/failed to do so.

This would seem to venture into fraud territory.

Just another step on the road to college athletes signing contracts and being bound to the school they sign with from year to year.
