He certainly did at that. I think it is hilarious that people get all uppity like one school being nerdier than the other school is such a great thing. Are we all trying to be like the Ivy league around here now? If anyone was really serious about going to the best school they should have gone to West Point or Annapolis for free.

There is nothing wrong with any SEC school. They are what you make of them. My SIL is a Vandy grad and she is in the Peace Corp. I'm sure she thinks she is wicked smart though.

Agreed. I think we all get caught up in "My school is the best!" and forget that it doesn't really matter in the long run. Then there are the "sidewalk snobs" I call them. I never went to Georgia, but I am a big fan. My daughter went, though, so I bet I sent more money to the school then most of the kids that actually attended did.

I guess we all have to be proud of something.

You implied that "TheRaid" was stating that when it was "AUreo" who did. "TheRaid" just clarified that "AUreo" was mistaken. As I stated with current links on the 1st page that UF is a quality school.

You have no idea what you are talking about. UF is precisely the only school in the SEC that is comparable to Texas, Cal, UCLA, UNC, and Michigan. Those are exactly UF's peer institutions and they are exactly in the same tier rankings- the only SEC school in that tier.

Auburn? Not even close. And, they aren't even an AAU university. UF is.

Is this a joke? There are only 4 AAU institutions in the SEC, Vandy, UF, Mizzou, and A&M. UGA is not one. The AAU consists of 64 USA institutions and 2 Canadian universities that are (based on rigorous criteria) the most elite academic research institutions. Notably GA Tech is one. So UGA is not even considered the top university in GA.

Yeah, I remember when Missouri was looking to get out of the Big 12, and some fans were angry that the Big 10 took Nebraska, a non-AAU school, over Missouri. The B1G made a big mistake in taking that loser school. But when the SEC came calling, no regrets.

And Missouri, while facing more formidable hurdles athletically in the SEC, is still reaping much bigger financial rewards than it was in the Big 12. I like being in the SEC for all sports. We'll see whether the Athletic Department is up to the challenge long-term.

You've made my point. The gap between the two will remain.

Not really. You said Georgia could not even be in the conversation. Yet, Georgia definitely IS in the conversation and will remain in the conversation.

I guess that depends on your definition of what it takes to be in the conversation, but you didn't lay out the guidelines, so until you do UGA is in the conversation. You want to make it a subjective criteria then it is subjective.

Academia vs the real world is unpractical vs. practical. I learned more in one month on the job than 4 years in college. I now make more money than the average mid-career Vanderbilt grad (according to these worthless report/rankings) and went to a state school. Academic rankings and smack talk are meaningless.

Thsi isn't rue, though, and I'm surprise that y'all seem to think it is.

Once you get a job it becomes all about the ability to do the job.

But if an employer has two applicants for a job and one has a degree from Georgia and the other one has a degree from Harvard, he is going to pick the applicant from Harvard 10 out of 10 times.

So, yes. Academic standing does matter. I think even inside the SEC...say, Vandy applicant verses Alabama would matter. If you are looking for an engineer you will pick GT over Georgia, and so forth.

bullshite that the numbers are wrong or bullshite that something else pays more?

Demand for Licensed Maritime grads is extremely high as the world does more shipping than ever and yet we have the smallest number of Mariners than at any other time in our history. There are only 6 Maritime Academies in the US, 3 in NY/Mass, 1 in California, 1 in Michigan for the Great Lakes, and Galveston. It's hard work and it involves being at sea for long periods of time. You also aren't going to worry much about paying a guy good money who is responsible for a $400 million container ship crossing the ocean and getting it into port when they only have a handful of officers on board.

My understanding of the AAU is that if you don't have an on campus Medical School or a huge Engineering school you can forget being a member. Those are the two programs that will consume the lion's share of research dollars.

Also, I believe schools that are not members of AAU may have more research dollars allocated to them than some members of AAU. Those schools are just not members of the club.

Folks that have a better understanding of the AAU criteria please chime in.
