Someone posted the other day about recruiting classes and the number of players that dont work out. Bama, UF, and others having very few and AU having quite a few recruits that dont seem to pan out. Seems like we have a fair number of transfers in the 2-deep as a result. We've also had a fair number transfer out. Does your school have a lot of transfers?

2017 AU Starters or significant contributors:
Austin Golson, Center -Ole Miss
Jarrett Stidham, QB - Baylor
Darius James, OR - Texas
Sal Cannella, TE/WR - Scottsdale CC
Wilson Bell, G - grad transfer, FSU
Casey Dunn, C - grad transfer, Jax St.
Trey Mathews, S - UGA
Paul James, DE- Copiah Lincoln CC
Jamel Dean, CB - Ohio State

Edited to add names I forgot

Only two in the two deep.

Jake Raulerson - OL - Texas
David Williams - RB - South Carolina

In fact, I only find one other on the entire roster, and not sure where he is in the mix.

Robert Decker - LS - UConn

ETA: The above are 4 year college transfers, we do have a good handful of JUCO transfers that will play some:

Brandon Martin, WR
Jonathan Nance, WR
Jeremy Patton, TE
Paul Ramirez, OL
Gabe Richardson, DL
Michael Taylor, DL
Britto Tutt, DB
Gary Cross, WR

Wilson Bell from FSU and Casey Dunn from Jack St also will be in the two deep for AU's OL. I don't really consider JUCO transfers the same though.

That's right. Forgot about them. With those guys added, that's about 20% of our 2-deep.

You surprised me here, because I can name several players from Bama who transferred, and UF had a coaching change fairly recently. Then, there are the oversigning schools that Big 10 fans are always complaining about. I would think that most sec schools had a larger than average transfer rate because so many good players come in and have to sit on the bench, and then leave for a lesser conference where they can get more playing time.

Hey, I'm not trying to flame here. I'm genuinely curious about this. I would be interested to know the number of transfers from the other schools compared to Auburn's. It seems that you guys have a bunch. It would seem to speak to Gus's ability (or lack thereof) to develop talent.

I also read the other day that Arkansas has sent more players to the NFL than Auburn has since Gus and Bielema took their jobs. But that the players Auburn sends go higher in the draft. The point was that this is directly responsible for Auburn's tendency to be inconsistent. From national champion calibre teams to barely bowl eligible the next year.

Good thread topic.

Florida: 2 deep or starter

TJ McCoy, Center - From North Carolina State
Malik Zaire, QB - From Notre Dame

That's it. Florida has had a lot more transfer out than in recently.

Most of the starters on the 2017 team are going to be Mac recruits and not transfers.

Offense 2 deep:
Muschamps 2013 class: 0
Muschamps 2014 class: 3
Mcelwains 2015 class: 6
Mcelwains 2016 class: 9
Mcelwains 2017 class: 2

Defense 2 deep:
Muschamps 2013 class: 1
Muschamps 2014 class: 3
Mcelwains 2015 class: 4
Mcelwains 2016 class: 9
Mcelwains 2017 class: 5

This is what piqued my curiosity in the first place.

I don't really count Junior College transfers as actual transfers. They were essentially recruits again, just like when they came out of high-school.

Uhhhhhhh No

surprised the shite out of me but uhh yes,

Arkansas

Draft picks: 22

First-rounders: 0

Skinny: Not only have the Razorbacks not had a first-round draft pick in the past five years, but Hunter Henry is the only second-round pick as well. The Arkansas tight end was taken in the second round of the 2016 draft by the San Diego Chargers. Henry played in 15 games as a rookie, starting 10 of those, and finished with 36 catches for 478 yards and eight touchdowns.

Auburn

Draft picks: 14

First-rounders: 2

Skinny: The Tigers haven’t had a first- or a second-round pick since boasting two first-rounders in 2014. Tackle Greg Robinson went No. 2 overall in the 2014 draft to the St. Louis Rams, and DE Dee Ford went later in that first round, 23rd overall, to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Mills kid that just got kicked from Georgia Tech ends up at Auburn if nobody else wants him

That's interesting about auburn and their transfers. The only transfer we have that plays significantly is Etling. However, over the summer we added three, Thaddeus Moss (TE) from NC State and Breiden Fehoko (DL) and Jonathan Giles (WR) from Texas Tech. All three will have to sit out this year but should see signicant PT next year.

Between relying heavily on transfers, and an inability to get players into the NFL, it appears to me that Gus just isn't very good at developing talent.

Again, not trying to flame here, just looking at the numbers.

Bielema seems to do a pretty good job developing talent. I just wish it would translate to more wins. Hopefully it will this season. Being year 5, he has no excuses anymore.

I agree, Malzahn's guys always come in super hyped but then you never hear much from them, especially all these D linemen that they were so proud of.

I thought with all of the talent that Auburn has they would have 12 players drafted in one year

I was literally going to post these exact words until I saw that you beat me too it. Is Auburn the sleaziest program in the SEC or has Ole' Miss surpassed them?

It's not really the HC as much as it is the position coaches, IYAM. I believe that's one of the reasons you've seen Gus shore up his coaching staff to get guys who have a track record of developing players. Rodney Garner is a proven coach who has sent many players to the NFL, but we've added others now, such as cutting Lashlee and adding Lindsey, Kevin Steele, Greg Brown etc. This is the learning curve of a still relatively new HC. He's smart and he's getting better. When he figures that out, watch out.
