1939 VOLS didn’t allow a point all season and beat USC in the rose bowl...finished 2n

USC beat them 14-0

Either way, 1938 and 1939 are recognized. The system back then was so flawed

As for the OP, 2001 VOLS come to mind.

They say the 2005 Rose bowl was the best CFB of all time.

So shouldn't the 1 loss team that lost that game be considered one of the best ever too?

I agree. If USC wins that game they are probably considered a top 5 team of all time. Man that run USC had was incredible. I was looking at 247 recruiting rankings the other day. the way they recruited between 2003-2010 was down right stupid. Hell in 2007 they literally got the #1 and #2 running backs They were ranking in the top 3 for like 7 years straight... and the fact that cant recruit now is mind boggling. their admin really fricked up with Helton.. if they kept coach O they would probably be on another massive run. THANK GOD

2011 LSU went undefeated in the SEC regular season slate, beat the eventual NC in their home stadium, beat the PAC Champ, and the Big East Champ(still a BCS conference at the time)

played multiple ranked opponents in the top 10 and top 5

outside of Bama beat most of those teams by an average of 20+ points

team was loaded with NFL talent many of which are still playing today

I would also add while less accomplished but still very talented the 2006 LSU Tigers.

2001 Florida would beat most teams on that list. So no.

They would be right up there with 2005 USC and 2011 LSU as far as best teams I've seen that didn't win the title. That was Spurrier's best team, IMO.

What hurts Auburn is they lost to Miami the next season (after the Canes lost everybody to the draft and graduation).

2004 Auburn is a much stronger case.

Jacob Coker on that 2016 Bama team demolishes Clemson. QB was the only weakness for that squad.

And outscored 13 opponents 500-123. Destroyed Oregon, West Va., Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, and Georgia.
Thanks BCS Coaches for ruining the 2nd best season in CFB history..

Nice...

For the record, went 1-1 with the national champions, and was the undefeated SEC Champ that year (which included a road win @ Alabama).

Non-troll question, how many rematches have there been of highly ranked teams, and did anybody go 2-0? I can only think of one other (Fla-FSU, which was also a split).

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "highly ranked". Putting ranking aside, when there have been rematches in CFB, the team won the first game wins the second game roughly 2/3 of the time. The old chestnut that says it's hard to beat the same team twice is simply wrong.
