Toomer's Oaks are Fine(baum)- Just a Toilet Paper Overdose.

I have been watching all the traffic related to possible poisoning of Toomer's oaks. I heard over the water cooler that someone called into the Paul Finebaum Show claiming they had poisoned the Toomer's oaks with the herbicide Spike. I was very skeptical, but I knew I could quickly determine if this was true. First, never passing up a teachable moment let me do some explaining.

The herbicide in question is sold by the name "Spike", spike_20P.jpg
but the active ingredient, the chemical compound that actually kills the plants, is called tebuthiuron. Tebuthiuron is very specific in its action--it essentially blocks photosynthesis from occurring. It is very specific to plants and is safe to humans.

With many herbicides, if one wants to tell if a plant has been purposely treated, one would take soil and leaf samples, extract the herbicide, and run it through some chemical analytical test to determine if the herbicide is present. This process can take weeks. But with tebuthiuron, since it specifically stops photosynthesis, a negative herbicide effect can be determined in a few minutes.

So I took my handy, dandy handheld chlorophyll fluorometer up to Toomer's Corner, clamped it on a few leaves and checked photosynthesis. fluorpen.jpgEverything is fine. It has been two months since the alleged poisoning, and there should be a reduction in photosynthetic activity-- and there is not. Just in case it occurred more recently, Auburn Horticulture has taken some soil and leaf samples for future analysis, if any damage ever appears. For now that is a moot point, the trees are fine, just a little beat up from all the toilet paper clean up. I will keep checking over the next few weeks just to make sure.

To anyone who has had the idea of poisoning Toomer's oaks or killing your neighbor's tree that is blocking your satellite reception--you can easily be caught. Not only can one quickly measure photosynthesis of the plant, but the herbicide will last up to a year in the soil surface and a little longer in the killed plant. It will be very easy to catch you.

If you had even bothered trying to comprehend that post you would have gotten the point I was making. The point being that Bama fans didn`t attribute a few Auburn fans rolling Toomer`s Corner upon Bryant`s death to the entire Auburn fanbase unlike Auburn fans with this incident. The incident was harshly condemned by myself and almost universally on all the Bama boards but some Auburn fans are blaming Bama fans in general for supporting it. I even get accused of being that nutcase because I dared to point out times that a few Auburn fans weren`t on their best behavior.

That article has been removed for some reason and replace with this: LINK

Poisoning of Toomer's Oaks not a Dead Subject
I have done some research and we should all continue to hold our collective breath. Due to the semi- dry fall and winter there may not have been enough uptake of Spike herbicide to induce damage. Thus, there still is a possibility they could have been poisoned and I cannot detect it with a photosynthesis meter. So please stay tuned - this still may become a problem. Why someone would do something that stupid I don't know. Let's just hope someone is not that stupid.

In case you have a case of selective reading.

quote:

As a precaution, soil samples were taken the next day and sent to the Alabama State Pesticide Residue Laboratory on campus for analysis. Due to a small fire that occurred in the Alabama lab in December, the tests were sent to the lab at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss., to expedite results.

Lab Results from soil samples

quote:

The lowest amount detected was 0.78 parts per million, described by horticulture experts as a "very lethal dose." The highest amount detected was 51 parts per million, or 65 times the lowest dose. Experts believe a normal application by itself would have been enough to kill the trees, which are estimated to be more than 130 years old.

Nice try "C"

"Al", the Fine-bum caller who suposedly killed the trees, is NOT a Bama fan. He is a Barn fan who is trying to start shat and incite retaliation from his own camp. How do I know? He signed off "Roll Damn Tide!" Seriously? No Bama fans say, "Roll Damn Tide".
That is a barn thing to inject "damn" between War and Eagle. Go on your lynching though if it makes you feel better. But you won't find AL if your are profiling a Bama fan.
The NCAA is still coming and you will still be giving back all the trophies you bought.
Sorry bout your trees by the way. It wasn't one of us though.

This is terrible, but honestly, not surprising. I lived in Alabama 8 yrs, and the ignorance of some of the people is really astounding.

What's the irony in all this you ask? How many trees do Auburn fans as a whole kill each year in throwing thousands of rolls of toilet paper into the trees?
