Worse, Capel got a shot at a decent basketball school, something Barbee never received.

hell I'm game for Stansbury
if he can do what he did at MSU here we'd love him

we has nice arena though?

Mike White would be a fool to bolt for Auburn. He's taken Tech from total garbage, to a team winning 20+ games. I think he takes Tech to the tourney next year and becomes a hot name. Auburn would just be 2-3 year career killing stop.

That's the million dollar question. Can he do it here? I have forgotten what post season basketball is like.

Auburn has no shot at hiring Pearl, he can wait on any number of better jobs. Jacobs does have to call him and make him say no though.

Stansbury would be a good hire and realistically as good as Auburn can get.

Just like new, hardly been used

Has no effect on the worth of the job. Several great jobs play in shite holes that get new paint every couple of years.
What does matter is an AD who stays the frick out of the way for 4 years, yes, he can step in if wrong is being done, but do not question or force a coach to change how he goes about things during this time.
What is also important is having people in his corner, meaning boosters and former players. He has to have people willing to back him towards his goals, not bail on him when wins do not come instantly.
As Auburn would put it you have to go "All In" with a hire, it could be a bad hire, but you have to do it if you want the next hire to be better.
The first step is not firing the HC in the hotel room an hour after a conference tourney loss, wait until the team is back on campus, settled, the coach meets with the team for the end of year meeting, then bring him in your office for a meeting and explain why you are firing him.
Basically do everything necessary to make a toxic job non-toxic.

He says he fired him before the kids scattered for spring break.

That would be a huge hire. Is it realistic though?

He isn't going to make a hire worth a damn until after the NCAA tournament anyway.
Wait a week, have the meeting with the coach while they are gone, ask him if he wants to address his team. If he doesn't, let that be known in the media.
You look to have a 100x more class than the way it was handled.

We need Ben Howland
No.
He isn't going to be able to win at Auburn because he will not be able to get the talent he needs to win with his style of play while at Auburn.
His style of play is the only reason he was fired from UCLA.
This style of play only hurts the SEC as a whole.
Posted on 3/12/14 at 11:20 pm to TiggerWoods
I don't see a Ben Howland caliber coach going to Auburn under any circumstance.

"Our basketball fans are actually pretty intelligent"
THIS. Alabama basketball fans are some of the most underrated fans of any sport in the SEC. Consistently rank in the top 30 nationally in attendance (and top 4 in the SEC) the last 40+ years yet the perception is we don't give a rat's arse about basketball. The program itself is only surpassed by Kentucky, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, and MAYBE Tennessee historically yet we are considered s### by those clueless of SEC basketball history. Alabama basketball fans are actually very knowledgeable fans and are a complete 180 from the typical sidewalk football fans.

I feel like Mike White will either wait for a high profile job or wait for Kennedy to inevitably be fired at ole miss (his alma mater). Plus they'll have a new arena and already have a nice practice facility.
Not to bash Auburn, but historically the Bama job is more appealing so I'd say he would hold out for grant to get canned and I'd imagine both Auburn and Alabama have made contact with him behind closed doors. Maybe Jacobs fired Barbee immediately because the wheels are already in motion for a big hire.

White's dad is the AD at Duke.
If he is offered the Auburn job, he will have plenty of people advising him against career suicide...

It's not bashing Auburn to say alabama is the better job. I think they know it's definitely a better job. I think Auburn needs to just try and find a low major coach from the south that likes playing fast and give him a shot.

at least let the guy get back to campus and fire him tomorrow. That was pretty classless of the Auburn AD
It's Spring Break. Players will be cutting out early tomorrow. They did it when they did so Barbee could tell his team face-to-face. Barbee would have been fired after last season, if the football, baseball, and girls softball coaches had not of been fired.
