Reading is fundamental - you missed the part that says "of All Time (1901-Present)." All time means the unit of comparison is years, 1 through 125, 1901-2025, 125 total years. Not the 2000s, not 50 years, 125 years.

It depends on how you weight different accomplishments.

Legitimate NCs:

LSU - 4 Doubles UT

UT - 2

UT has a slight advantage in wins, win% and SEC titles. Relatively large advantage in head to head though the programs don't play very often.

LSU has a slight advantage in total weeks ranked, a large advantage in weeks #1

I'd say legit NCs pushes LSU ahead by a nose, but can see the argument either way.

Back in 2019 is better than back in 1998.

Do you know what they have in common? They are both in the past.

L8&4U might as well get used to it.

My bad, you have a championship winning coach now...OH...wait...

That's true. One is just MUCH more recent.

Wow, if you go look at this dudes imaginary polls prior to 1936, they are hysterically bad. I mean REAL bad.

I admittedly did not realize that Tennessee only had 2 consensus national titles and 2 in the poll era. I thought they had a more substantial national title history than that until this thread made me look it up.

Looking at their other claimed ones, 1938 seems legitimate. They didn't play a difficult schedule but only allowed 16 points all year and beat #4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. TCU generally gets the nod that year, but UT's resume that year stacks up pretty well against theirs all things considered.

1940 is real bunk. They only played one team that finished ranked (Boston College in the Sugar Bowl) and lost to them. They never cracked the top five in the AP rankings. They shouldn't count that.

1950 seems like a decent claim. They played well against a tough schedule (10 - 1 including wins against 3 teams in the final top 20 and 2 in the top ten) and the primary claimant Oklahoma's resume stacks up about like Tennessee's.

1951 is an absolute chaos year. There are like five teams that have a somewhat legitimate claim on this year. Maryland probably has the best claim (undefeated and beat Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl by 2 TD's). That is probably a half title at very best.

1967 is a terrible claim. The SEC wasn't very good that year, and while UT went undefeated and beat the only other ranked team in the conference in Alabama, they lost both games to out of conference teams that were any good (UCLA and Oklahoma). USC's (the primary claimant for that year) resume is much, much better than Tennessee's (also beat the only common opponent they had in UCLA, whom UT lost to). That claim is Alabama 1941-worthy.
