Times have change. Clemson had arguably the best defense in CFB this year

And Ohio State and LSU averaged 572 yards and 33 points on them. Both of which, particularly Ohio State, left points on the table. Defense still has its place but I don’t think a team without an elite offense can win the National Championship anymore

The game is always evolving. Offense gets creative and defense adjusts.

Only if you ignore the level of competition they played.

Clemson got held decently by LSU’s defense.

Yep.

I don't disagree with the OP that college football has changed, but I don't think this year's Clemson defense is a good measurement.

Then insert whoever. Auburn? Oregon? Ohio State? LSU from November onward?

LSU, Bama with Tua, Ohio State, etc. could put up 30 on them on an average day

Yet, LSU couldn't score 30 on Auburn...at home.

Don't forget what Clemson's D did to Tua and that record breaking Bama offense last year.

It took literally Jesus at quarterback to light them up this year

That Clemson D had 3 defensive lineman drafted in the first 17 picks of the NFL draft and 5 guys drafted in the first 4 rounds. It wasn't even remotely the same defense.

Also, Alabama had 443 yards against that defense with all those NFL guys. They just kicked our arse in the red zone, which is more power to them. But a lot of that had to do with those 3 DL who were drafted in the first 17 picks of the draft.

The LSU vs Auburn game was like 23-20, though granted, Mac Jones put up 40 something on Auburn.

The rules favor the offense now. Linemen and defensive backs hold more than ever and get away with it, the 3 yards downfield for linemen on pass plays are more difficult to judge than the 1 yard it used to be and on pop passes often isn't called, pick plays often aren't called; just a few among many examples. Fans like offense because it's more entertaining. As always, money is the bottom line. Sell that merchandise on the ESPN commercials.

The key word in that statement being average. A lot of points were left on the field that day and I’d say that performance was an outlier. Not that your defense didn’t perform well, we just made a bunch of uncharacteristic mistakes and calls.

Not even trying to make this an LSU vs Bama thing. Just pointing out that you only have to look back to last year to see that defense is still hugely important in CFB. It may not have been the same defense this year but they were still elite and would have held any other team to <30 points

Yes they were a very solid defense this year, but they weren't nearly the group they were in 2018.

Would be like comparing 2020 LSU offense (which will probably be very good) to the 2019 LSU offense (which is better than very good).

Ok? I told you I wasn't trying to compare teams. I was addressing the OP's claim that CFB is all about offense now

Sure. And Auburn had maybe the best defense in the country. My whole point is that you will probably have to win a handful of shootouts to win the national championship. Regardless of how good your defense is

Sorry, I've just seen this comparison quite a few times on this board since Monday as if the 2 defenses are the same unit.

Years ago you could always say the team with the elite defense would win the game. Nowadays, not so much. And in this particular situation, Clemson hadn't played anyone except Ohio S.
