I was addressing the OP's claim that CFB is all about offense now

Never said that. I simply said that you need an elite offense now. As for the Bama Clemson game, Bama was a false start on the 1 away from putting up 200 yards and 20 points in the 1st quarter. Bama moved the ball all game but because Clemson scored so much, Bama had to go for it on 4th down over and over.

It took literally Jesus at quarterback to light them up this year

Are you referring to our Heisman winning quarterback, “Joesus” Burrow?

LSU’s defense AVG
#2 scoring offense 41 pts (47.2)
#4 scoring offense 25 pts (43.9)
#6 scoring offense 28 pts (42.1)

They didn’t play great the whole season but they were fantastic when it mattered most.

The game is always evolving. Offense gets creative and defense adjusts.

At this point, the *rules* adjusting in the favor of the offense I believe is starting to cripple the old "defense wins championships" mantra. As SoG pointed out the other day, it's not that you can't win big with great defense, but it just looks different. You're not going to regularly grind great teams out to a 20-17 win. On balance, you need to be able to score at least 25-30/game, even with an elite defense, and you need to be capable of stretching the field with explosive plays... Without that, you are operating with a razor thin margin of error.

See 1st half of SECCG this year. UGA's defense probably did as good of a job containing LSU as was possible... couple of breaks with the Burrow self reception and some ridiculous grabs by the WRs and you still give up 17 or 20 in the first half... w/e it was. But we had zero offensive production and at some point, if your offense can't produce, the defense isn't going to be able to stall forever.

The best defense just gave up 600+ yards and 42 points.

I think it is obvious that Auburn holding us to 23 points was the best defense in college football.

Please make no mistake, LSU's defense was integral to winning that natty. They played lights out Monday.

You could've gotten a soothsayer to conjure up Bear Bryant from the beyond, and conjure up the greatest defenses he or any other college defensive specialist ever had, and conjure up Tom Landry to be his assistant coach, and they were not going to stop this LSU team this year.

It simply was their year, and they had a QB who had the best season I've seen a college QB have in 55 years of watching the sport. Period.

Yet, LSU couldn't score 30 on Auburn...at home.

And Auburn still couldn't win that game despite being handed a turnover deep in LSU territory, because Auburn's offense sucked.

Which underscores the point in the OP. It's better to have a great offense and an average defense than a great defense with a plodding offense, because no college defense is going to consistently stop modern offenses.

LSU could have had the best defense in its history this year and still would have lost a couple of games if we were running a Miles offense. Would have lost to Tua for sure, and one of Florida or Auburn.

If we play Auburn again on a clean field, we win by 30.

LSU is the best defense in the country as evidenced by the complete domination of 2 elite offenses in the playoffs. 28 and 25 points scored by teams averaging nearly 50 a game.

Ohio State would have been a much better matchup. Their D-line can create immense pressure without blitzing, which was Clemson’s downfall against LSU

See Bama vs. Auburn. They were basically inverses of eachother yet Bama was probably 14 points better with Tua at a neutral field

Clemson defense gave up 42 points. Georgia gave up 37. Auburn did better than that.

LSU's defense was their Achilles heel at the start of the season. The injuries couldn't be overcome. They got healthy and we saw what it did to Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma. Our OC was our worst enemy.

It's a little short-sighted to use a record-breaking offense as a launching point to say that defense is taking a back seat overall.
