Hi, I am a high school coach in Missouri and last weekend a player of mine had an ATV accident. Layne, who is a freshmen lefty, was a very promising point guard and pitcher for our programs. After the wreck Layne had to have his 3 middle fingers removed on his left hand. All he has, of now, is his pinkie and thumb. As his coach all I could think about was how can I try and help him. So, myself and some other coaches reached out to his favorite team... The Vanderbilt baseball team.
I emailed Tim Carter Corbin, head coach at Vanderbilt, to see if he could give him some words of encouragement! Later that day, he emailed me back, and got Layne's information. I expected, being in the middle of conference play, a quick shout out and that's it. Well, coach not only contacted him with encouragement by text, but also wrote him a really encouraging letter.
I thought that was all he was going to get, and I was more than impressed. Then today at school I received a package. Coach Corbin sent Layne an ACTUAL jersey! Folks, if you could have seen his face when he opened the package... It was priceless.
Layne is a remarkable young man, but obviously is going through a rough time. Sports has been his life for so long, and right now it's in question what he can do in the future. But, this has definitely helped Layne keep his mind off of it, and also motivate him to move on.
I just wanted all of the SEC to know how awesome of a man Coach Corbin is, and hopefully Vanderbilt realizes how lucky they are to have him! Sorry for the long post, but God Bless!

Great share. No surprises there that Vandy's classy, but that's pretty cool. Sorry to hear that about Layne. Glad the accident wasn't any worse, but that sounds like it would be tough to adjust to for sure.

Coaches and athletes can have such a positive impact on other people. it is GREAT and uplifting when you see people do these kind things for each other.
Good on Coach Carter.

Thanks for sharing. I had a cousin get into a horrific ATV accident when we were kids and sadly he is still completely disabled with very severe brain damage. Those machines are far too dangerous for kids to be riding for fun in my opinion.
But I don't want to hijack your thread. That's awesome what Coach Corbin did for Layne. Classy move indeed.

Great share but.....who the frick is Tim carter? It's Tim Corbin.
But back to the point, coach Corbin is a known class act, and this story doesn't surprise me at all. Glad to hear he was able to really brighten the kids day.

Right on. Stories like these should be more of the norm and not the negative junk far to often on front pages. Hope your boy finds the path God has for him. Good on you too for being a caring mentor.

This is so great.
You're a good coach, MB.
And it sounds like Vandy's skipper is cut from that same cloth.
Thank you for making a difference in the lives of these kids and their families.
I'll add Layne to my prayer list and will look for him to do big things in the future--on the field and off.

That was very very cool of him to do. I can only imagine what something like that would mean to me in highschool. I'd probably be pro. Shitty coaching ;P Props to Mr. Corbin, Ill be cheering for him

Thanks for sharing. We all like to assume the coaches at our favorite programs are good people, but it's always a pleasure to hear stories that confirm it. Coach Corbin makes me proud of my university.
On a sadder note, I can only imagine how much this sucks for Layne. I hope he overcomes this loss and manages to find a happy ending after all. Life takes you to unexpected places, and sometimes the places you reach aren't where you originally planned to go but are some really good places to be when all is said and done.
ETA:
He said the player was a fan prior to this, not him. Let's face it -- unless you're a fan or a prospect, college baseball coaches aren't really household names. So messing that one up is understandable.

I'm so sorry to hear about Layne's accident. Thanks for sharing this great story. Coach Corbin is not just an amazing baseball coach but a true asset to the entire Vanderbilt community. We are all very proud of him and are fortunate to have him here. I hope we never take him nor the success he brings to our program for granted.

I emailed Tim Carter, head coach at Vanderbilt,
Tim Corbin ... but yeah, he is a good guy. Used to be an assistant at Clemson, thankfully Vandy hired him away before they fired Leggett but when SC suffered from floods last year Corbin was big in helping to get relief aid send in the form of truckloads of stuff from Vandy.
Thanks for the story and God Bless your kid Layne. Can't imagine what he is going through but I know those hand and finger injuries on ATVs are common. We had a bad one happen at our hunting club this past fall.

Sorry, I was doing it on my phone and his email has his full name, Tim Carter Corbin. The Corbin part was cut off, and I am an idiot. Sorry about that, the man deserves better than that! Sorry coach Corbin
