It's pretty ironic to ask that a college honor the memory of Charlie Kirk by pre-emptively blocking the expression of controversial opinions on the grounds that some people find them offensive.

So glad that LSU could finally bring Alabama and Tennessee together... in hatred of Charlie Kirk. Wild times

The University of Tennessee has fallen. Fat liberal white women ruin everything they touch.

Why are leftists so consumed with hatred of Charlie Kirk? How dare someone debate ideas in an open forum!

But the good people of Tennessee could use a visit from Gov. Landry. Maybe Tate could use a secretary now?

This is the same University of Tennessee that fired a professor who celebrated the killing of Kirk.
The University President said, “Your words celebrated a gruesome murder, which horrifically took place on a college campus similar to our own, and then went on to callously demean the grief and loss felt by the widow and young children of the victim while also mocking any grief felt by others who sympathized with the surviving family,” and fired the professor. The school had to settle out of court after the professor sued them.

Using the anniversary of Kirk's death to support restrictions on expression on college campuses shows that you don't even understand what many people considered admirable about him.
You have missed the entire point of someone you apparently care a lot about, and that's honestly kind of sad.

Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences. It wasn't that she said those things...it was that she is a representative of The University of Tennessee. She was free to post those things...but The University also has clauses in their contract regarding rules of conduct. If you violate those, then you are in breech of contract. This was not a tenured professor, and she violated the stipulations set forth in her contract of employment.

Either way, fans of Kirk can hold one, but not both, of the following opinions:
1. Kirk was a great guy for showing that colleges inappropriately censor the expression of unpopular opinions.
2. I support colleges censoring the expression of unpopular opinions about Kirk.
You gotta pick one.

You’re missing the boat. Everyone wants to hide behind freedom of speech. There are consequences, express yourself. If you want to celebrate someone’s death, then by all means do so at your own discretion. Because each company, business, and school of certain rules which must be upheld while being enrolled or employed. If you violate those rules then regardless of your freedom there are consequences.
I’m not saying this is necessarily violating a Tennessee rule but I can tell you that it violates a rule at other universities and companies.
LSU used to have free speech ally which was the only area you could freely engage in that type of behavior. If you did it anywhere on campus you were in violation of schools rules and had a punishment.
Celebrating someone’s death especially a public figure is highly insensitive regardless of which side of the aisle you fall on. If we cannot agree on that simple fact then humanity is truly doomed. Especially when the death was by assassination.

I doubt if the university is sanctioning this. You got crazy people on all university campuses these days. Matter fact, Charlie Kirk came to Knoxville and they were more people there supporting them than against him.

My point is that Kirk opposed the censorship of unpopular and arguably insensitive ideas on college campuses. He argued that part of the function of a university is to be a marketplace of ideas, even if those ideas might offend others. The censorship of speech that falls short of the legal standard of being "intended to incite and likely to produce imminent lawless action" by a public university has a chilling effect on freedom of speech and is counterproductive to its function.
Therefore, Kirk's admirers must adopt one of two contradictory positions:
A. Kirk was correct. Censorship of unpopular and potentially offensive speech by universities is a threat to freedom of expression and should be opposed.
B. Kirk was wrong. Colleges should step in to censorship speech that may not be illegal, but is unpopular and offensive (to me).
