This can leave you with thawed food in your freezer and frozen food in your fridge.

So long as the temp stays between above 32 and below 36 degrees Fahrenheit to keep the freezer/fridge from kicking back on, no?

I think the assumption was that your fridge was in sub-freezing conditions so all of the food should have remained frozen.

But, either way, you came home to a shite situation and no food. That sucks.

I'm not really sure of the technicalities of it, I just came home and the thermometer in my guitar room was around 20° and the food in my freezer was thawing out, not all the way but getting there.

At first I thought it'd just went out so I was thinking about that, plus the possibility of burst pipes, plus how I was going to get more gas. Luckily, I came out pretty good

Dude, more than half the state is populated by New Yorkers and Midwest transplants. The only part of Florida remotely considered the south is Pensacola to Gainesville.

I lived in KS for a few years. Miserably cold winters and God awful hot, dry summers. The 20 knot wind is constant. Makes winter even more miserable and feels like a hair dryer to the face in the summer. A truly awful place; outside of good hunting, I've no reason to return. I'll take hot and humid summer with cold and wet winters.

I also did some years there and I was thinking the exact same thing when I read his post.

And, for the ice is worse than snow crowd, sudden ice storms have a more drastic immediate impact, especially in rural areas. But, the snow gets a sheen of ice on it, then more snow, then ice and over again until its a slippery hard packed mess. That is why shoveling the drive is so critical. You'll be iced in and not able to clear the drive until spring in some places. The north and midwest get ice and snow, and it lasts months. They are just better equipped to deal with it and keep life moving along.

As you say, they have equipment that keeps the roads clear. But it's much different. Ice storms are way worse. They had an ice storm in Kansas a few years ago and they all thought it was way worse than what you mention.

I was out of town during the week and forgot to check my gas level before leaving.

Came back to 20° inside the house, water and toilets frozen solid, and everything in my freezer thawed out

I was very lucky though, I have PEX and didn't seem to bust any lines or fittings, toilets didn't crack, and was able to get my tank filled yesterday.

A rookie mistake I wont make again.

That's too cold for my blood. I'll stick to the Gulf Coast.

Apparently side by side refrigerators/freezers spaz out when its colder outside the unit than inside and it doesn't come on. It was warmer inside the freezer than in the house.

Why was air inside your freezer above 20°?

East Tennessee mountains pushing it off us. The weather forecast for us has been the least reliable or accurate weather forecast I’ve ever seen because of those mountains.

I don’t know what part of the Midwest you’re in but summers hit 100 on a regular basis in the parts I’m familiar with. Just less humidity and more wind.

Before moving to MSP, I was in west Texas for 3 years. I'd take the dry heat all day over humidity.

Its around 90° here on average in the summer but summer is much shorter and less humidity is key.

You can actually enjoy mornings and evenings outside without sweating.

at three-below-zero and high today of
six---the snow actually feels good ; nice
blanket for tonight's -7. Toughen up !
You'll be fine when you thaw out.
