i don't think the mercy knee in itself is the "selling point" of that being rehashed. its the fact it happened about 3 minutes after halftime.

because the former didn't happen. Jevan Snead took one knee with like 30 seconds left. Ole Miss didn't take 4 straight knees with 5 min to go from the 1 to give the ball back to LSU. "Mercy knees" happen in almost every game the winning team has the ball with the lead and the opponent no time outs.
In 2011, Mettenberger took 4 straight knees at the 1 with 5 minutes to go. Ole Miss got the ball back with 3 more minutes still left on the clock.

Since 2008, Ole Miss is 1-8 in Baton Rouge and LSU is 3-7 in Oxford. That’s the sign of an evenly matched rivalry
