I think targeting, when applied properly, has changed the game for the better. I would not have said that 5 years ago but I do now.
I have no issue with the targeting penalty but do with the punishment. There should be no ejection unless a player does it a 2nd time during the season. Otherwise punishment should be left on the field for advantage to other team.

Youth participation has dropped huge.
Those under 25 are way, way less into sports than older generations.
There's a major contraction coming to all sports in the next few decades.
Between foo-foo parents, kids interested in other things like video games and apps, and sports driving off traditional fans with politics, it's gonna be in free fall from the peak.

Bull shite....those teams can get off their lazy azz and try to compete are F just quit!
I didn’t say I wanted to fix it.
But if it comes down to college football being relegated to irrelevance due to lack of interest because only 4 - 6 teams have any shot at a title, then rewarding P5 conference doormats and G5 contenders with first pick of 5 star recruits is about the only option.
(If people were craftier, teams like LSU and Auburn would collude to send some of their 5 star and 4 star transfers to Tennessee to help build that program back up.
If Tennessee, Michigan, Texas, and Florida State could return to form it would help reduce the dominance of Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Clemson.)

It's one the reason why college basketball sucks now.

Several issues I see here:
In regards to college and pro sports there is not a decline because most see decline in those levels of play measured financially and from what I am seeing and reading those numbers financially continue to grow.
Attendance is going down on those levels but why spend so much to see a game live when I can do it locally or a home. I mean prior to Covid the local UA group met every game. We usually average 75+ people. The food is far better than anything at the stadium for a lot less. Do not have to pay for parking, wait in long lines for traffic after the game, and sleep in my own bed. Unless it is a stadium I have yet to visit I prefer to stay local, like most do now. Not to mention way to high ticket prices.
In regard to youth sports football takes a huge hit for multiple reasons especially at younger ages. One to many concerns by parents due to injuries. Second equipment cost a lot more than basketball or soccer. Last very limited opportunities for kids to touch the ball or be in a position to be the star.
In regards to soccer I could easily discuss its value and downfalls. For many parents soccer is seen as a better sport because every kid plays, they all run, and they all touch the ball. Similar to bball. The equipment cost is far cheaper and is usually payed by the parents. Even for the travel teams parents fully subsidize the sport even paying for the refs and coaches while subsidizing the club staff and club expenses.
But there are many issues with youth soccer in this country. For the most part it is a country club sport inaccessible for many financially. Also because so many clubs charge such high fees to participate they have to justify it which means finding a way measure it to justify the financial investment. So what happens instead of developing players the majority of clubs focus on winning at all cost. This in turn has killed the US now and going forward for the foreseeable future for a seat at the world soccer table. The US youth soccer(USYA) is the largest youth soccer organization in the world, especially in registrations, and the richest youth soccer organization in the world, but yet we can not even qualify for the World Cup in by far the easiest qualifying group.
In the end recreation facilities, youth clubs, and schools are going to follow one the interest which as others have stated with current trends being soccer and basketball and two the sports with very little entry costs to facilitate them. Football, baseball, and hockey, all youth sports seeing a decline are also the most expensive even for the basic rec level.

This is only because ADs at those programs made a smart coaching hire. Just because the others either did not want to spend or made the wrong choices will never change. Hiring a coach in college athletics is either a great or bad business decision. No different in bringing in a new CEO. And in the end who wants 20+ above average teams each year playing for the NC? I would rather have 4-6 great teams with the hope of having great playoff games.
I find it amusing that some complain about youth participating awards killing youth sports because it makes athletes less competitive but now want a way in college football to do the same and allowing anyone that participates a chance at the trophy.

Most people severely underestimate the absolute disdain liberal elites...academia... have for male dominated sports. Even worse, the hatred they have for the money involved as coaches are usually the highest paid employees on campus. College football is under attack, pure and simple.

The best thing the NCAA could do is investigate Alabama. Lord knows there's enough skeletons over there to fill up a landfill. And damn near every coach from the tree gets investigated for rampant cheating. They learned it from somewhere. Until they break up the cartel, it'll keep declining.

That would definitely be quicker than the barners actually trying to do something about it on the field of play. Remind everyone, when Cam got his money was that in big bills or money order?

They priced out families so a lot of kids grew up not going to games and not building that bond with teams. That coupled with the lack of boredom that kids face today by having a million electronic games to get involved in, football has definitely already peaked in popularity. It's only down from here and that's simple logic.

US Men’s soccer sucks because the best athletes in the US play football, baseball, basketball. American soccer (and now lacrosse) is usually made up of kids that can’t play the big 3. There are some soccer first athletes, but not nearly enough to be competitive at all he international level.
