but this is a roster payroll, not a portal payroll. The total money spent on roster is the total money spent on roster regardless of how it is allocated

Kind of lines up with probable finishes in the league this year. Who could have predicted NIL could have had such an effect? God, I hate the NCAA for not taking care of business for the last 20 years.

True yet there's plenty of "back channel" information out there to give a pretty damn good estimate. Have to remember, a large majority of these kids, particularly the higher paid ones, are signing some kind of deal. When signing something there is inevitably some record of it somewhere. The Supreme Court has leaks, you think liberal universities dont? Leavitt and Sorsbys contracts leaked within days.
In short, they may not know all but they know enough to give estimates which this is plainly stated to be. Sure there's exaggerations but there are also plenty of kids making more than you'd think. Those 500 grand kids add up.

Nebraska is getting the least value, uga is getting the most, Clemson Florida Penn state usc and usce are overpaying for results by a good bit.

You do realize that money paid to players in the portal would go toward the roster payroll, right? Their NIL payments would be included.
It is also very possible that II am completely misunderstanding. That does seem to be a possibility. As I am understanding....money spent on retention would be included in this number. As would dollars from NIL to attract high school recruits. What I am saying (or trying to say) is that Georgia puts more money in retaining players already on the team that have proven to be contributors, and less on high school players.

So far so good. That said, once Kiffin gets the payers he wants and success follows...it should take fewer dollars to attract people to LSU. And...if recruits hesitate to sign on the dotted line, Kiffin can always drive them to Mike the Tiger's enclosure and threaten to throw them in if they don't go to LSU.
That's a recruit pitch that would be hard to turn down!

Also, when a player is shopped around to multiple schools, everyone in the business knows what it’s gonna take to sign that player. There’s no disincentive for an unsuccessful suitor to spill the beans about what amount the player needed to get in order to sign him.
