I'm watching the 30 for 30 "The Gospel According to Mac" (which I highly recommend) about Colorado coach Bill McCartney, when it got to the infamous 5th down game in 1990 I was pretty much familiar with the outline of what happened: the field surface was awful with players slipping constantly, Colorado spiked it on what should've been 4th down, Colorado refused to forfeit (I can't blame them), etc. But why did Mizzou fans rush the field? Were they thinking that being on the field would make the refs overturn the result or that the play hadn't counted or something? I guess I should add that it would have been a huge upset as well

Was before my time, but I'd have to agree with the argument Colorado was still deserving of the shared NC, they played a brutal schedule including Tennessee, Oklahoma, Washington Nebraska and Texas. GT's schedule was not great outside of UVA and Clemson

ETA: I think most SEC fans would do the same lol

Idk that's just how Missourians are.

If we see something happen right in front of us that's crazy we can't just stand there and do nothing.

What do you think LSU fans would do? I feel like if this happened to some of the teams with 2x the number of fans in the stadium as Missouri it could get really dangerous really fast.

The closest thing to something like this I saw live(on TV) was when they let the clock run out after Vinatieri's kick in SB36. I was engraged for days.

If I was watching a game live in person and watched as the refs gave the other team an extra down, acknowledged that and then let the result of the game stand I would probably be running down to get on the field too.

edit:
I think it'd actually be fun to get responses from all the other teams on how their stadiums would react to this.

I wish I was alive for that game so I could’ve seen what kind of items I would’ve broken. I mean we threw paint at a roommates car, and neighbors house just because Kansas came back to beat us in basketball one time

LSU fans have lost our edge, but I'd like to think we'd at least shower cups and other available projectiles on the field

I guess I should've included that it would've been a bigger upset than I realized. Colorado was already 12th in the AP and Mizzou was only 2-2

Not a Mizzou fan, but the fifth down was one of the worst, and most inexcusable, thefts perpetuated by referees against a team ever in college football.

We got buttfricked by the refs in Baton Rouge in the early 70s when LSU beat us by getting 2 plays off in the last 4 seconds. On its surface that doesn’t sound impossible, except that the first of the 2 plays lasted like 10 seconds and then there miraculously was a second left on the clock after that play, which they ran a final play and scored. To add insult to injury LSU fans put up a billboard on the state line that said “you are now entering Louisiana, please set your clocks back 4 seconds”. Masterful and ruthless trolling, I’ll tip my hat to that. Keep this story in mind whenever you hear them cry about the refs though (which is every game).

There was also an ordeal between us and Arkansas that got very ugly in the 60s. We’ve generally always played each other every year but this game Ole Miss kicked a game winning field goal as time expired. Refs said it was good, Arkansas fans swear it was short. Fighting erupted all over the stands and it was so bad the series was cancelled for many years. Both schools claim a win from the game lol

ETA here’s a link to some recap and feels of the OM players from that 1972 LSU game. Butthurt that just couldn’t be hidden frick LSU

I agree the Omniturf at Mizzou was horrendous and Mizzou was not a good team that year.

I am not sure what the worst part of 5th down was....that nobody noticed they had 5 downs or the fact that Colorado didn't score on the 5th down play.

I was six at the time so I had no clue what was going on. The Fifth Down Game and the ND TD called back in the Orange Bowl; Colorado was very, very fortunate to have things go their way that year. That being said, their schedule was definitely deserving of an outright national title. The one point UPI win for GT over CU is evident that Colorado should have won outright. GT’s only blemish, a tie to UNC, coached by Mack Brown.

As stated earlier, the Fifth Down is one of the biggest atrocities in CFB outcomes history. Another similar ordeal was the OU fumble recovery at Oregon in 2006 when it was clear OU recovered and was shown with the football and still Pac-10 officials are looking for the football in a pile.

Missouri has endured some unlucky situations:

1990 Fifth Down Game

1997 with Nebraska winning in the waning moments with a TD deflection off the foot in the end zone.

2007 CCG losing to Oklahoma where a win would have sent the #1 Tigers to the BCSNCG.

But the Tigers have experienced many highs thanks to Pinkel. The Tigers handed the Sooners a loss in 2010 when OU was BCS #1 in Columbia. That was the last time the Sooners were #1 in the main poll that decided things in the end.

You think that’s bad? A ref tackled our QB going into the end zone.

I maintain that the refs gave us a makeup call right after. We got stuffed on 4th and goal at the 1 that drive but the refs called it a score.

Colorado was a ranked team and Mizzou was at the bottom....and I echo Miznoz regarding the Vinatieri kick. Both games were horribly officiated, but no one cared about the latter because New England was a Cinderella at the time.

2nd & 7 at SC 10
(8:31 - 1st) Ryan Hilinski pass complete to Ryan Hilinski for a loss of 9 yards for a TD Ryan Hilinski fumbled, recovered by Misso Cale Garrett for a TD, (Tucker McCann KICK)

I still maintain the position that this was not a catch and therefore could not be a fumble. Do you think if a receiver did that they'd call it a fricking catch? Unbelievable. Always weird shite going down in the Missouri/South Carolina game.

I meant to add that the ref did used to play LB for UK. Garcia actually had to lead us to a comeback victory the week prior after our starter had shite the bed.

quote:

“Well, I didn’t run into the ref,” Garcia told SB Nation. “He literally tackled me.”

“It was a zone-read,” Garcia said, recalling the play. “So the running back was on the lefthand side. We’re in shotgun. I read the defense, and I pulled it. I’m getting ready to run into the end zone, and this frickin’ guy kinda shuffles and lowers his right shoulder right into me.”

“I’m sitting on my butt, and I look at him — and I can’t really tell you what I told him,” Garcia said.

Luckily, Garcia did tell me what he actually said.

“I was like ‘what the frick are you doing?’” Garcia said. “I was like ‘what the frick, this is bullshite! I’m getting ready to run it in!’”

South Carolina beat Kentucky 24-17 the week before, helped by Garcia’s coach, Steve Spurrier, putting Garcia in off the bench. Garcia refers to “conspiracy theories,” as he calls them, relating to Hackett’s alma mater.

“Maybe that’s why, he had flashbacks and he was pissed off for leading the comeback the week before.”

Guy should've never been allowed to referee again after that.

Just seeing this.... I was there in the student section... we were screaming on that the game should have been over. The 5th down tackle was such an obvious blown call as well. He was clearly short of the goal line. Haven’t seen the 30 for 30.. look forwArd to it.

Agreed.

The SEC in its infinite wisdom concluded that the ref was only trying to defend himself.

That's pretty fricking trashy if we're being honest.
