what I never understood is why no one in the pressbox and/or Missouri said never piped up. 1990 was 30 years ago,but there were phones and such in the pressbox and coaches on the sidelines could speak.
Tulane and Miami had a 5th down game in 1972 giving Miami an extra play and subsuqent win with about :40 left.
LSU and Mississippi State had a game in 1968 where Miss State was victime of a 3rd down,or how you'd phrase it. In the 4th, LSU was ahead 14-13 and State had a first and goal. After a sack of one or two yard on first, State got back 5 or 6 on a draw. On what should have been 3rd down, the refs ruled it was fourth. State obviously protested but the refs wouldn't budge. State kicked a field goal to go up 16-14. LSU scored to win, 20-16 denying Miss State its lone win of the season.

Meh. Oklahoma was favored by over a touchdown in this game for a reason.

That might be the luckiest great play I've ever seen. The kick was incredibly lucky, and the WR who dove and somehoe caught it before it hit the ground made an amazing play.

I was at that game with my girlfriend (now wife). It was a pledge class reunion weekend. It was a day game as pretty much all were back then and we had started off with some "Bloody's" that morning and continued to drink during the game (it was notoriously easy to sneak booze in back then).
My wife's claim to fame is she turned to me as they lined up to snap on the 5th down and said "that's five downs". I said something to her like "don't be ridiculous". None of my inebriated fraternity brothers caught it, but somehow she did and she's not even a Mizzou alum.
All of COMO was in a daze at the bars and restaurants that night. We all expected to wake Sunday morning to find that the result had been overturned. Wasn't to be.
Met a Colorado lineman that played in that game recently. He told me the confusion as just as great onthe Colorado sideline. Was surprised it stood.

Indeed, believe it or not I wasn’t too bright when drunk at college. But everything was paid and fixed so oh well.

Andy Reid was the offensive line coach at Missouri at the time.

That Moo State / LSU 5th down game actually happened because the ref handling the down marker on the sidelines forgot to flip it over. The field ref ran over to him to check & the sidelines ref confirmed it. For yrs he always claimed it was an honest mistake. But when he retired from reffing, he did say, once, "well, mabe I didn't really forget". Goober Morris will always be in LSU's unofficial HOF for that one play. AS for that 4 seconds left game with the Rebs, I was half way up behind the Reb's bench & I will never forget the entire bench & players on the field throwing their helmets into the hedges surrounding the back of the end zone. 80 + helmets flying through the air is a scene I will never forget.

So I just watched the 5th down sequence for the first time in a long time... the play before Colorado spiked the ball they ran for it and were stuffed at the goal line with 18 seconds left to play.
The clock runs down as it should and then inexplicably stops and then started again when the ref reset the ball and then went down to 3 seconds before Colorado spiked it.
That shite is more mysterious than the confusion over the extra down.
Is there an explanation to this that I'm missing?

I saw that play live with my roommates in our dorm room and we couldn't believe what had just transpired.

Did you mean the game in 1968 where Miss State lost a down?

Here's a really detailed article on it. Apparently CU and MU people in the pressbox knew what happened and Colorado's center knew it but was told to keep his mouth closed.
Coincidentally Colorado's OC was future LSU HC Gerry DiNardo

As the starting center -- and team brain -- it was Leeuwenburg's job to always know the down and distance. So he raised his hand to say, "I don't think we can do that, Coach. I think that's going to be fourth down when we spike the ball."
McCartney's response: "Shut up and play center, Leeuwenburg
