No other FSU quarterback had more than 2 completions for the season, so if he was 3rd string...I'm not sure who they were saying 2nd string was.
Before playing Tennessee, Outzen was:
11-19 (57.9%) against Wake Forest
13-22 (59.1%) against Florida (yep...he started and played the entire game in their win over #4 Florida). The only 2 teams to beat that Florida team were Tennessee and Florida State (with Outzen...not Weinke).

yep. just checked. it was 1999 when mississippi state had the nation's # 1 defense (#1 in total and # 1 in rushing)...again in 2018 as well.

But they were still a dominating defense in 98, too. Just nothing like they were in that '99 team.
...ETA...'99 was when Fred Smoot transferred in. I loved watching him play.

They say third string bc Chris wrinkles was a freshman, he became the starter when the 1st string qb was injured before the season even began.

The Florida game was all fsu D(which was incredible that year) and Peter warrick. Peter warrick took a routine drag route into a 50 something yard house call. He also had to throw a 50 yard td pass(trick play) bc the offense was severely hampered during the uf game.

Let's not try to add make-up to a pig here. You played and beat two teams that finished in the Top 10: Florida and Florida State. Pretty standard stuff. Although 1998 Tennessee is hurt by the fact that the latter Top 10 team they beat was without their starting QB.

However, the fact that they won the national championship the year before with a schedule that featured OOC games against Nebraska, Missouri, USC, Washington, and Virginia Tech, I think they earned the weaker schedule in '79.

And Tennessee was missing their starting RB. Bama fans crying about injuries is the ultimate irony considering the favorable treatment they have been given for decades
6 Bama natty teams spanning 3 coaches were given easier routes to a natty than Tennessee was. Not called the cheating tide for nothing

Lived in TN in 1998 and they got more than their share of breaks. First game of the year at Syracuse, got a phantom PI call from the SEC crew late 4Q that kept a drive alive and then won 34-33 on a FG at the gun. Beat Auburn 17-9 and one TD was a 90 yd fumble return by a DT, a 10-14 point swing. Beat FL in OT when FL missed a very makeable FG. Before the Stoerner fumble, Ark called a perfect TE throwback that was wide open and would have likely sealed the deal but pass was dropped. As others mention, FSU had to play Outzen. Football gods smiled on them all year.

This is true. However, Tennessee lost Jamal Lewis relatively early on in the season, whereas Chris Weinke went down in November. He started in 10 of FSU's 13 games that year. Weinke would go on to lead Florida State to a national championship the very next year and won the Heisman Trophy in his senior season. They obviously missed him.
Meanwhile, Jamal Lewis would have his best days in the NFL. The highest accolades he received in college was 2nd Team All-SEC in both 1997 and 1999. His replacement, Travis Henry, finished 1st Team All-SEC in 2000 and left Knoxville as Tennessee's all-time rushing leader. So let's not act like Henry was a significant downgrade from Lewis in 1998.
