FSU's starter - Weinke - played in 10 games and was 145-286 (50.7%)
Marcus Outzen - played in 12 games and was 36-60 (60%)

No other FSU quarterback had more than 2 completions for the season, so if he was 3rd string...I'm not sure who they were saying 2nd string was.

Before playing Tennessee, Outzen was:

11-19 (57.9%) against Wake Forest
13-22 (59.1%) against Florida (yep...he started and played the entire game in their win over #4 Florida). The only 2 teams to beat that Florida team were Tennessee and Florida State (with Outzen...not Weinke).

yep. just checked. it was 1999 when mississippi state had the nation's # 1 defense (#1 in total and # 1 in rushing)...again in 2018 as well.

But they were still a dominating defense in 98, too. Just nothing like they were in that '99 team.

...ETA...'99 was when Fred Smoot transferred in. I loved watching him play.
