Another interesting stat…

Avg. Margin in Games against other Sweet 16 teams:

+10.5 Michigan St.
+8.4 Florida
+7.5 Houston
+6.2 Auburn
+5.0 Duke
0.0 Alabama
-0.2 Texas Tech
-0.4 Purdue
-0.7 Tennessee
-0.8 Maryland
-1.7 Ole Miss
-2.1 Arizona
-5.1 Arkansas
-5.6 Michigan
-6.0 Kentucky
-12.8 BYU

Once again, BYU sticks out as the outlier here.

It does to a degree as it can show that some teams have played and did very well against better competition. Example is Ole Miss. I’m not sure they’ve been given enough credit considering their schedule. Duke is one as well. Do I think they’re an incredible team? Absolutely and maybe the best overall. But have they played tough teams week in and out like some SEC schools have? No. And that may come into play with a close game

They looked really good when I watched them against Baylor and beat Auburn in the regular reason. Conference was a cakewalk for them but I think they're just that good. Blasted Illinois 110-67 as well.

Duke is good, and they've gotten better as the season has gone on. The only thing I take exception to is the Illinois game and its significance. Pretty much the entirety of that team was either dealing with flu or getting over the flu. The talking heads lost their minds over the big Duke win, and very few of them even mentioned that reality.

That said, Duke is very good.

Exactly. Take out the 3 losses to Auburn and Ole Miss is +26 points in 8 games combined against Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Purdue, and BYU. That’s a very strong resume.

Yes. And the margin of victory stats show that when Duke does play Sweet 16 level competition, their margin is really no different than most of the other 1 and 2 seeds.

Not to mention, Illinois was a flawed team. The evidence of that has been around all season. They ended their season with 5 double digit losses against the Sweet 16 teams, three of which were by more than 20 points. They had the ability to get hot and win a big game, but more often than not they did not look like much of a contender.

Agree on Ole Miss. I think they played the most dominant game against a top 3 seed that I've seen.

I don’t completely disagree, but BYU, Arkansas, and Michigan, for example, came into the tournament playing their best ball of the year.

Lost by 19 to UF, assuming the other games were all closer?

BYU has a bad margin because they lost 2 times to Houston by 31 and 20 (the first being on 1/4 during a 3 game losing streak before they kind of figured it out with a 1st year coach).

Since February 11 (about 6 weeks ago) they are 11-1 with their one loss being to Houston by 20. Their wins over that stretch

- @ West Virginia by 4
- vs Kansas by 34
- @ Arizona by 1
- @ Iowa State by 3
- N vs Iowa State by 4
- N vs VCU by 9
- N vs Wisconsin by 2

They are #4 on Torvik over that stretch overall, only trailing Duke, Houston and Florida (#2 offense, #60 defense).

We are #7 over that same stretch (#4 offense, #38 defense).

Will be a very good game.

I mean, yes… that’s how math works:

+14 vs Kentucky
+11 vs BYU (N)
+10 @ Alabama
+7 @ Arkansas
+3 vs Arkansas
+2 vs Tennessee
-2 vs Purdue (N)
-19 @ Florida
———-
+26 combined

That excludes the three games against Auburn where Ole Miss was -10, -30, and -5.

Beating the teams in the current sweet 16 field during the season, while impressive, is totally different than doing it in the actual sweet 16 with the pressure.

The question with them will be how they respond when they are back in a dogfight, as they've had some issues down the stretch of those types of games so far this year.

We're a neverending rollercoaster. Doesn't matter if we're up by double digits or down by double digits, the game will still be undecided in the final minutes.

I need an Auburn fan to help me out...

Ole Miss-3
Houston-1
Alabama-1
Kentucky-1
Tennessee-1
Arkansas-1

Where is the 9th win that I'm missing?

Yup, I was out of town and didn't get to see any of that game and forgot all about it.

Thanks

Duke looks the best right now.

Why? You can't tell that until they play a descent team. The ACC looks pretty bad in hindsight. They for sure will got all the calls with the kid from Maine, but lets see how it shakes out once they have to play teams with more talent. They do not have the best talent over all, that is for sure.
