I’m shocked that Alabama’s OOC games were not enough to sway the committee. I mean look at this murder’s row…
Western Kentucky
South Florida
Wisconsin
Mercer
One of those teams went 11-2. Sure, that’s Mercer who’s a FCS team. But that’s beside the point.
It’s a travesty I tell ya.

USC has 2 wins over ranked teams and 2 losses to ranked teams
so you think SC should be in playoffs with wins over Clemson and Missouri, neither ranked in the top 12?
the only way you can get SC into playoffs is to first put Bama and Ole Miss in.

LOL you got corn-holed by the Cornhuskers and lost 3 games total. The only 3-loss team in the playoffs won their conference - you weren't even in the game.

Played WKU, USF, Wisky(5-7), and FCS Mercer! Where was the hard P4 OOC games. Mercer has been back as a football program 12 seasons an and Bama has played them 3 times in the last 8 seasons.

Over SMU who is 0-2 against ranked teams, including a loss to Clemson and team worse than Missouri?
Yes
Over a Clemson team who lost to both SEC teams they played, including USC and only has a ranked win over SMU who is probably truly about the level of Missouri?
Yes
100% yes. All day, every day. It's probably one of the biggest frick you's I've seen in college football to see Clemson in the playoffs while USC sits at home. It's complete horseshite.

The community note is bad here. The point being that sec/big 10 is enough weight as a tiebreaker to not risk it.
If you have 4 teams:
Team SEC 10-2
Team ACC 10-2
Team Big12 10-2
Team Mtn West 10-2
SEC team gets in no matter what their OOC schedule was. So, there is no need to ask increased risk — like Wisconsin could have been a trap. Michigan for Texas. And non-sec/big 10 are playing catch up so they like this risk. Big12/sec not gonna give them the chance anymore.
You’re now going lose unnecessary rivalries. GA/GA tech = gone, Clemson/sc = gone, Kentucky/louiville = gone, Florida vs miami/fsu = gone etc.

I think the rules change next year to take SOS more into account, not necessarily give conference champions automatic byes, go to more of a seeding format. The future will be the SEC joining everyone else in 9 conference games and everybody in the SEC playing a Big !0 opponent annually. Who plays who in the other 2 regular season games to be determined.
Posted on 12/8/24 at 5:43 pm to 3down10
People in this thread seem to be letting their disdain for Bama overshadow the broader point, which is that the playoff committee has effectively ruled that SOS does not matter. What matters principally is not quality of wins, but merely the number of losses without regard to basically anything else.
It is true that Bama did not lose an OOC game this year, but that is somewhat beside the point. What Byrne is highlighting is that, given the dynamics now in play, there is no reason for an SEC team to make their schedule even more difficult and more of a grind by playing high end non-SEC schools. This is unfortunate, as these games are really cool for the fans and the teams. But with this new system, and the way the committee has chosen to adjudicate teams — there is not much of an upside if your ultimate goal is to make the playoff. Sec teams already have some of the toughest schedules every year b/c it is the deepest conference overall.
A great hypothetical example would be LSU this season: for argument’s sake let’s flip the Bama result and say they would have beaten Bama 42-13 in Baton Rouge, but they have losses to USC (OOC) and then on the road to A&M and road loss to FLA. they would still have quality wins over Bama, Ole Miss, S. Car, and another OOC win over UCLA — and a respectable 6-2 conf record. But even with better quality wins and a much better SOS than say SMU, they would still be out b/c they scheduled a tough OOC game against USC to open the season, and lost, bringing their total losses to 3 instead of 2. In this scenario, if they schedule LA Tech to open the season (instead of USC) and beat them 44-10, and then end up 10-2, they are probably in. Long winded, but this is the main point that Byrne and others are making. And this is applicable to basically any team in the SEC — it’s not unique to Bama.

why beat your team up by playing big OOC opponents
But you didn't play a "big" OOC opponent, you played a 5-7 Wisconsin team and three little blind schools. You then lost to two 6-6 teams and UT in-conference so I don't follow this argument at all.

Literally none of the massive sport altering changes that have occurred in the last 5 years are good for college football. Why do we care about this one? Had the inverse happened conference championships would be a punishment. Is that good for college football? Shutup Greg
