And the ironic thing is Ron Polk did absolutely nothing at State.

In one CWS Appearance, John Cohen won HALF as many CWS games as Polk did in his ENTIRE career at State.

Polk built the program, while Cohen truly began to tap its potential. It’s exactly what I’d like to happen soon in Oxford re: Bianco and whoever ultimately succeeds him

True, but I will still give credit where credit is due. Ron Polk showed Skip Bertman that baseball in the SEC can be profitable. Skip just reaped all the benefits of that

This. Cohen went father in the CWS than Polk ever did.

Meh. I think Polk just got lucky that he inherited a program that only cared about baseball at the time and just rode that wave until everyone else showed how pathetic of a coach he truly was. After 1990(when Bertman started the dynasty):

0 SEC Titles
0 Division Titles
1 Tournament Title
1-4 in the CWS

Such a great coach.... And that's what State fans biggest issue is rn. They view a mediocre coach as the gold standard. Him not winning the CWS in 1984,85, or 89 shows how big of a joke he is.

Eh. he made the CWS 4 times after 1990. That's not a transcendent coach, but it certainly a better resume than most. he also took three different schools to the CWS, which isn't exactly easy to do.

After 1990 he only went to 3 and only 2 of those were with State.

I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to argue here. Was Polk an elite coach? No. Was he pretty good? Yes. Most coaches never go to the CWS, much less three times in the arbitrary time frame you're wanting to use. Even fewer (likely no one) have led three different programs to the CWS. I think you're trying to minimize what he actually did accomplish to try to argue he sucked. Sorry, I just can't agree he sucked. he was a solid coach and did a lot for this conference and college baseball outside of his success on the field. I will give him his due credit for that.

Actually he took 3 different schools to the CWS. Georgia Southern back in 1973.

Not sure why some wish to disparage Polk so much. Probably the same ones that would denigrate Mike Martin because he has not won CWS ignoring the fact that he has been to 38 straight Regionals and to the CWS numerous times or disparaging the Buffalo Bills for making four straight Super Bowls but failing to win one of them.

At least they were there at the top but just did not ring the bell. Better than never having had a chance to win a Championship at all.

State baseball coach Search has nothing (nada) zero in common with UT football coach Search. That is a #fail on thread title.

Who remembers the losers? Who remembers the Bills? Falling short is nothing to celebrate.

From good to great. Polk wasn't great.

anyone who loosely follows the NFL remembers those Bills teams. Just like anyone who loosely follows college baseball remembers Ron Polk and his teams at State.

If you’re born before 1995, you’ve at least heard of those Bills teams... Honestly, they’re more memorable for failing four consecutive times than probably Phil Simms or Mark Rypien are as Super Bowl MVPs who beat them, especially Rypien. If you followed the NFL at all in the 90s, the Bills immediately come to mind as the best franchise from that decade not to win one

For whatever reason, people today seem to like to argue that you're either one of the best or you sucked. there is no in between. I don't know why people think arguing like that is effective or logical but I see it every day.

How do you know Schloss was looking for a pay raise?

Well I'm pretty sure he wasn't looking for a pay cut. Cohen knows exactly how much Schloss is making, and he's not even going to contact him unless he can offer an attractive deal.

I'm not certain of any specific numbers being thrown around, but to even have a conversation with a Schloss about the job State has to offer over $1M, and probably North of $1.5.

Thank you

I would argue that playing and losing for a Championship makes you a much better team than the last place team in the conference or league.

Those Bills teams had players like Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas , Kent Hull, Bruce Smith, Andre Reed, Darry Talley , Steve Tasker etc but because they did not win the SB they sucked. Really, that is the way some of you on this site view things. Sad :(

You’re only a failure if you fail to meet whatever reasonable expectations are placed on you. Like, the Eagles won their first Super Bowl in ever this year, and they weren’t the Browns just because they’d never won one post AFC-merger

I agree. Our baseball program is way overrated based on what our fan base says.

I would not say overrated at all.
I think our fan base expects to compete well in the SEC most years understanding that we will have down year every so often, be in Regionals 7-8 times out of every 10 years, in SR’s 3-4 of those times and in the CWS 1-2 times every 10 years.

I don’t think that is unrealistic in the present day when almost everyone in the SEC is good to very good to great. Plus you throw in other programs that have raised their level of play, built nicer stadiums and such.

I think some of this speculation about a new coache is unfounded rumor, gossip etc because you can spout whatever you want on MB’s and someone will run with it.

As I have said it will take care of itself in due time.

You are truly after State for some reason, and it burns at your arse they flipped it around this year....while your cheer squad is at home.

You've started several bash State threads, do you want Maroon all to yourself? Adidas? Clutch hitting? Super regionals? Sorry Dudy Noble dwarfs your ice cream stadium, is that it?
