Damn Butch got cut from the list already? Cohen isn't messing around.

generally speaking, official offers are not made until parties are ready to sign. That doesn't mean negotiations haven't happened and been unfruitful for State

Technically no coaching job is offered until someone accepts it. Saving face and whatnot

Sucks that Cohen had to tell him no. I know that this is Butch's dream job.

true statement
When State does hire their new coach I bet Cohen will say some form of this statement in the press conference. "We targeted one guy and focused all of our efforts to make our guy the next coach at Mississippi State".

It would not shock me if we kept Henderson.

CWS Champion Gary Henderson

After getting rejected by your top 5 or 6 guys then, yes, that makes sense.

Unless it’s Henderson, then it’d probably be something along the lines of, “We could not deny the level of success Henderson brought with him this year in the face of extreme adversity,” or something else along the lines of what Ole Miss spewed out when we retained Luke
ETA: Obviously Henderson had a better season than Luke, and otherwise it’s a loose comparison I’m making between the two situations

If we keep Henderson, I hope our fans come to realize we're not a top 10 baseball program.

Just because you're not a historically top 10 programs doesn't mean you can't be. You've invested heavily into getting top tier facilities. You're at least willing to swing for the fences for a head coach and likely offering a lot of money (probably not the 1.7 M or 1.5 M mentioned previous in this thread).
Regardless of the outcome of this search, State is doing its best to put itself on the path to winning and winning big.

State has always done this.

I'll have to take your word for it. I didn't follow too closely before we joined the SEC.

Only way I want it is if it means Gautreau can be HC in waiting.

State is at the absolute best the 3rd best program in the conference (though Carolina and Vandy both have modern titles, and LSU and Florida are clearly better programs, and Arkansas is extremely comparable) which makes it a rough spot even if State were truly a top 10 spot. The SEC is unquestionably the best and most difficult conference, and other comparable programs from other easier conferences can make more attractive offers without having to ask their manager to run the gauntlet

until the last 10 or so years, the only schools in the conference to really invest in their programs were State and LSU. Then Arkansas and USc did, followed shortly after by Ole Miss, then Vandy, etc. Then you saw everyone in the conference follow suit. State may be overdue for an overhaul of their facilities, but their commitment to the program has always been there, even pre-dating LSU. Honestly, Ron Polk doing what he did is largely responsibly for the false sense of entitlement and thinking their program now is more than it actually is.
