She didn’t bow to the narrative that Griner deserves support as an LBGTQ athlete despite allegedly breaking Russia’s drug laws. Griner is being used by both the Ruskies and by the LBGTQ lobby (which is indistinguishable from the media). Mulkey had no obligation to comment. Whether she should have been more cagey in her response in another matter.

Russia doesn't have a great human rights record on LGBT issues but Griner is behind bars because Putin thought he could use her for leverage in negotiating for corrupt businessmen and spies he wants back from our custody. She's not there because she's gay and she's not there because she had mary jane in a vape pen. She's there because Putin has a history of taking American and European citizens prisoner to use as bargaining chips.

When she finally does get out of Russian custody some other American will think it won't happen to them and will wind up in a similar situation. As long as Putin is in charge that cycle will repeat over and over.

I can see the argument for a cooked coachspeak statement being given every time this question is asked in a different way, but frankly, I respect her for rejecting the bullshite groupthink that goes into these social issues.

Griner done fricked up. It sucks, and I wish her well, but she did something stupid.

But that would spark a conspiracy bc there was recently an article about how Griner’s detainment hasn’t stopped male American athletes from going to Russia to play for professional teams there. They were being shamed as unsupportive.

And I’m not sure how young you are to know who Tekashi69 is, but he’s trending for doing a lot of dumb shite in Russia right now. So if makes you wonder of all the famous Americans over there, why chose her?

what a weird response- you are borderline psychotic re A&M.

Back to the issue- no fan of Mulkey but i love the response. I do agree as said above would have been better to just say something like “sad situation” then refuse any more comment.

yeah...i mean all she had to say is "its a sad situation" and she would have been fine. her answer was just cold towards the situation, and it just was a poor answer from a coach. A coach is like a politician in that their answers have to be calculated

Some context: This media person knows, or should have known if he was halfway good at his job, that Kim has already addressed this very topic twice this year (sending BG love and prayers and wants her to be able to come home). I’ve also seen it mentioned he used to cover USC women’s basketball and Dawn Staley — so maybe he has an axe to grind against Kim?

Anyway, this was a gotcha question from go intended to generate clicks. Kim isn’t going to comment any further because she’s a little bit more than a month out from a new basketball season with players who she owes her time, attention, and energy. This presser was not about Griner or Baylor or Russia; it was about LSU, LSU’s players, and the upcoming LSU basketball season.

Kim handled it perfectly, and I hope she never takes another question from this twerp again.

Griner threw Mulkey under the bus back in 2013 and espn loved writing that story
No wonder she’s pissed
I don’t feel sorry for griner
Others have been in prison a lot longer and she’s gonna get out
Didn’t the federal govt tell people to stop putting this in the media because it hurts griner’s cause
If the media wants her out so bad go fly to Russia and protest and see how that works out
Even the families of other prisoners are pissed at griner and the attention she’s getting
And it was a lsu press conf as poster above mentioned

Nor do I. I know we all make mistakes and I’ve enjoyed the ganja occasionally in my adulthood but how dumb do you have to be to take it to Russia? I bet Kim was thinking (and still is) ‘what a stupid bitch’ and since she’s a southern gal she’s going with the ‘if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all (unless you’re anonymous on a message board)’ so imo Kim is being extra nice with her ‘no comment’.

Dude her situation is weird with BG after she got crucified how she handled BG’s sexuality at Baylor. The media was waiting to pounce on her, easy.

I think Baylor, being a private Baptist university, had a "don't ask, don't tell" type policy regarding sexuality.

The whole “wrongfully detained” bull shite on Griner irks me. She broke the law entering a foreign country. If a visitor broke one of our laws and got jailed, would that be a wrongful detention?

It's like the American who got publicly caned in Singapore years ago. Don't go to another country and break their laws.

Is 9 years excessive for THC? Yes, but maybe don't go to a country that has an adversary relationship with the US and put yourself in a position to be used as a political pawn.

Poor, sad little man.

I don’t care about her either, but I support her view.
