Watching last night and wondering..
what’s the down fall to the “ bowl “ design of the Rose and Michigan stadiums. It like how there is no multiple layer upper decks. Seems like you would have a better view in the bowl design. Curious as to why more are not that way?

Most are deigned now with luxury boxes in mind. Maybe it’s something to do with that

Doesn't hold sound in as well as other designs.

At Michigan the only way to see anything is by standing on your seats

Because it starts at the front and then the entire bowl has to do the same

Lots of stadiums added upper decks years after initial construction

Lines of sight are better in tiered bowls. Acoustics better too.

Also gets more seats closer to the field.

Say you have 100 rows of seats, and each row is 2 feet front to back, in a bowled stadium the last row is 200 feet from the field.

Now take those same 100 2 foot rows and tier them 50 up top and 50 on the bottom. Even if upstairs row 1 is above downstairs row 10, the back row is still less than 120 feet from the field.

If you make that upper deck steeper, like @ Clemson, that back row is even closer to the field.

Both the Rose Bowl and Michigan Stadium are built into the ground. In other words, for the Rose Bowl, the ground is built into the side of the gently sloping hill on which it is located, resulting in an amphitheatre bowl.

Per Michigan Stadium, they have an extremely high water table in the area which led them to build 3/4 of the stadium being built below ground level.

Georgia's Sanford Stadium is also built into a valley, with the lower decks having the ground supporting the structure.

The Rose Bowl, Michigan Stadium, and Sanford Stadium were all built in the 1920's (1922, 1927, 1929 respectively) and built with no upper decks. UGA only added N and S upper decks in the late 1960's.

The Rose & Michigan Stadiums will not build upper decks on their stadiums due to aesthetics.

As for upper decks providing louder noise? Depends. Oregon's Autzen Stadium doesn't have an upper deck and that stadium is deafening. Texas A&M does and it's deafening, too.

BTW....the Rose Bowl reduced capacity from 102,000 (record attendance is 106,869 in 1973) to its current 88,565 in order to lower the field and increase viewing pleasure of fans of those seated in the lower sections.

This exactly. That is the main thing I remember about the Rose Bowl. How far away the seats were from the field and how flat the bowl was. Someone 8 rows down from you could stand up and still block your vision of the field.

I haven't been to the rose bowl, but the Dawgs fans who went out west loved the sunset/landscape sightlines.

Sanford Stadium has the sunset with our west endzone (bridge).

Get fans closer to action, increase height. You can't see the action from tops of those two ancient stadiums.

The problem is the bowl is so big that towards the top rows you are so far from the field. Those stadiums aren’t the average lower bowl size. They are both like 100k and over. The decks allow that level to be closer.

I know it is small but “The Rock” at Southern Miss is probably the best stadium to watch a game. 38K is capacity but both decks are steep and give you a great view of the field regardless of where you are sitting.

Because at the top, you’re a long way from the field.

Georgia making its 2nd trip to the Rose Bowl was a dream come true for me here in Los Angeles!! My last "dream bucket" is for UGA & USC (my two alma maters) to play for the national championship -- or play each other in the Rose Bowl. Probably won't happen, but you never know!

Here are some of those famous Rose Bowl pics...

The Rose Bowl is an incredible place to watch a college football game in the late afternoon,

To me it is one of those places that lives up to the hype.
