What brought the SECW to what it is today? Did it start with Urban Meyer, Les, Saban, etc.?

IMO, as soon as Saban took control of Bama and was given that 4 million dollar contract, the race was on.

Discuss.

Either the death of Paul Bryant or a SECCG being put in place.

It started when LSU gave the third highest contract in college football to a coach from Michigan St with only one great season, and no conference titles, on his resume in December of 1999.

Agree with above poster. it just existed in different form. People forget how powerful the SEC was pre-expansion in the 1980's and 90's. Then, after Coach Stalings retired, Bama went on a suck-arse streak. You little whiper-snappers don't remember Bo Jackson, and Emit Smith at Flawda, or even Payton Manning.

Nick Saban is responsible for much of the current state. He built LSU into a power, then left for the NFL, then returned to Bama and revived that program to an unstoppable dynasty. Auburn, Ole Miss, and even MSU are now following suit. Hell, Arky looks to be a power again real soon.

Always been that way.

Remember that bammer paid $200,000 for one defensive lineman from Memphis WELL before saben got there.

The money has been flowing for decades. I would say it all started with bear bryant. He showed most of the coaches how to cheat and win. Our most successful coach (Dye) was great because he learned how to pay for play under Bryant. Jackie sherrill is arguably miss states most successful guy and he learned to cheat under the bear.

The list goes on but I would say the SEC arms race started when bryant amd bammer said "screw the ncaa, we are gonna spend our way to the top".

10 Most Corrupt NCAA Athletic Programs

3. Auburn — Seven Major Infractions: Seven major infractions for now, anyway. The Cam Newton situation aside, Auburn has had a difficult time playing by the rules over the years. Its most embarrassing incident occurred in 1991, when 60 Minutes aired recordings of head football coach Pat Dye arranging a loan for a player. The series of incriminating tapes were provided by former star defensive back Eric Ramsey and unveiled a player payment scheme involving the coaching staff and prominent booster “Corky” Frost. For its wrongdoing, Auburn received a two-year bowl ban, a one-year television and ban and lost 13 scholarships over a four-year period. Dye was replaced by Terry Bowden, who became the first Division 1 coach to go undefeated in his first season but had nothing to show for it.

Alabama isn't in the top 10 fwiw.

Yes, it always starts with Bama. If it started with Saban in your eyes, then it would have to start with Tommy T's thumb.
But anyways, I'll finish my post with some Gump art.

How would you term what happened to Bama's D that game considering AU had 91 more yards and all.

Bama wins ten games and thinks Shula is hot shite; they subsequently pay him a boatload and have a top ten crootin' class

LSU signs a top ten class, and Auburn nabs a good one to boot

Orgeron is recruiting well in Oxford, although on-field production is lacking

Croom develops players well enough to win eight games and the Liberty Bowl in 2007

Houston Nutt's roller coaster ride goes up the final incline of his tenure in Fayetteville

Lurking on the horizon are:
Saban's return
Alabama's return
Alabama's dynasty
Cam Newton
Dan Mullen's program-building stability
BMFP
Hugh Freeze and the Landshark Defense
Johnny Football
Gus Malzahn's offensive genius

the short answer to this is when the SEC started making big bucks. ESPN and CBS began to infuse massive dollars into the league and competition began to boil. LSU and UF both won 2 NC's and Bama got Saban. boom, the other schools began to spend that money on coaches and facilities. it became appearant that the better coaches are worth the money and your school had to have great facilities to attract recruits. the better coaches demand these facilities.

the bigger question, imo, is why the east hasn't kept up. they are getting their share of the pie. they are behind in coaches and facilities. I realize that's a general statement but every team in the west has improved their facilities and enlarged their stadiums where it appears the UT, UF and UGA are just standing by.
