South Carolina was always a better fit culturally with the SEC. We just reunited with 10 members of our old family from the original Southern Conference in 1991 - but this time in the SEC.

Every conference needs their version of Wake Forest.
Just happy to be there.

Well I was at Mauldin High at the time. I have moved to another school but yes still live in that area. David was a special talent, best I ever coached. Didn't have to do a lot of coaching with him. Basically just gave him the ball and told him go get them. Not just saying this, been in education and coaching thirty years now, one of the best kids I ever knew. He has a great job now, nice family living a good life.

Had no idea Tanner did that.I am Clemson guy as well as Carson Newman alum so don't know all the ins and outs of Gamecock athletics. Have nothing against y'all except when you play Clemson just don't know the inside story. Know a lot of fine people that finished Carolina. Thanks for the info.

Im sorry this thread is about conference affiliation.

The OP has a subject line, it will clue you in about the content most of the time.

You may be looking for the Clemson boards.

yes and Vanderbilt certainly is a fine member of the SEC in that fashion. Wake Forest has actually won the ACC in basketball as Vanderbilt has in the SEC.

When was Pickens' last ACC basketball title?

3/4 of the posts on their own boards are about the Gamecocks. Funny how Danny and Coach want to talk shite about Carolina Girl considering the redneck trash that make up a large percentage of Clemson's fanbase.

Nobody in Pickens County cares about basketball. NOBODY. Only time place sells out is when the Tar Holes and Puke come to town. Then half the fans pull for them. Its a joke

Most of you are probably too young or even know and I as only a kid when it happened but Carolina should have never left the ACC.

Yeah, well, I'm old enough to remember all of it from the meetings to the flags to the bumper stickers. I remember the absolute bullshite that was/is the tobacco road heirarchy. I remember the entire Freddie Soloman issue, among others. I remember seeing Frank's son Franky hanged in effigy, in a wheelchair no less, at a basketball game.

The ACC blew donkey dicks then and they blow donkey dicks now. If the ACC was so hot shite great you wouldn't see all the ACC fans over here wishing they were in the SEC 24/7/365.

Going independent those few years in football and the Metro for everything else really hurt them.

Yeah .... lulz. They really hurt us. (::::: he types as he looks around at the mega money expansions and improvements happening all over campus thanks to 27 years of SEC membership :::::::: )

We've been in the SEC longer than we were in the All Chump Conference, pronounced "the A she she."

I remember distinctively where I was and what I was doing the day it was made official, that SC had left the ACC assclown-of-a-conference. I remember the parties, the phones ringing off their hooks, people running out into the street .... we were free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we were free at last and most of us have never once looked back.

Thank God for Paul Dietzel. We owe him a huge, massive, debt of gratitude.

I remember most of that. Tobacco road is full of A holes. Commissioner of the conference UNC grad,A hole. Yeah lot of A holes.Seriously do you not think it set you back a few years in basketball? I mean Carolina was the real deal in basketball, Roach, Bobby C, Dunlevy, English etc... I think y'all could have sustained that. I went to some games at the old coliseum, fun times. Got to play a high school state final in it, great place. Wish they would have just renovated it.

Yes its been twenty seven years and your capital improvements and athletic success has been good the past ten years. But you got to admit going several years without sharing bowl money etc..was not great. It took a little time to reap the benefits of being in the SEC. Lets be honest you didn't make many bowl games in those days as an independent and was not exactly on TV that much.

Just giving my opinion bud. Not trying to start a fight with you. Work with a lot of fine Carolina grads. Carolina is a fine school. Good education program. I hire teachers that are Carolina grads all the time. Excellent business school, probably best in county. But hey if you want to talk shite I'll talk football and you can talk womens basketball ok.

I will say this much Carolina fans are loyal. Sold Williams Brice out when you had the 1-21 streak. Not many places would have done this.

Vince Dooley is the only reason we are in the SEC.

That's not even remotely factual. Yes, he helped, he put in a good word for us at the urging of his two good friends, Jim Carlen and Paul Dietzel, but he was not the main reason and was certainly not the only reason.
quote:

We played UGA consistently in the 1970's and 1980's when we were an Independent.

We've played UGA more times than any other program on our schedule, other than Clemson. We've played UGA something like seventy times. We've been in the SEC for 27 years. Do the math ... we've played UGA consistently since the turn of the 20h century and long before Vince arrived in Athens. Certainly long before just the 70s and 80s.
quote:

Dooley had a fondness for South Carolina and argued at the time that our state's culture and fan support made us an attractive candidate.

Yes, that's true. Those were almost his exact words he used in an interview I did with him live, around 2004 or 05, that was also later used in countless articles trying to breakdown the sequence of events that led to us getting the SEC invite. He and I had talked about it, in-depth, after a radio interview I did with Coach Carlin in 2002 during the day of the UGA game which coach Dooley was sitting and listen-to in his car on the way to the stadium ... and Jim and I were reliving the 80 game.

But Coach Dooley will be quick to tell you he just put in good words ... it was Roy Kramer who pushed it, along with Bill Arnsparger who askex Jeremy Foley, in 91, to walk us through the arse kissing process and I wanna say Foley was named AD shortly afterwards for showing some serious skills during the process. I asked Jeremy about it one time right after we moved into the CLA when he an I were eating in the press room and he alluded to the fact that indeed it was a feather in his cap working with Kramer and the other ADs as a senior associate to get SC pushed through ..... because Florida ABSOLUTELY DID NOT want FSU in the conference.

I could go into more detail and, at one time thought of writing a book about it from Carolina's perspective ... but I'm too old now and my buddy Tom Price already did a pretty good job of it in book before he passed.

The entire south is recognized nationally as a region stuck in the past, whose people are stupid (true or not, it's the perception because ya'll sound stupid when you talk), poor/poverty stricken (look at any list, the bottom ten states are a who's who of southern states), and obese. You guys should embrace the yankee culture a bit more, if it weren't for the flood of yankees heading south to take advantage of all the cheap labor, you would be even further behind.

So the South is just like Missouri? You literally just described the state of Missouri.

As a Clemson fan I can understand the hate from Scrooster towards the ACC. The ACC is pretty much and has been controlled by the North Carolina schools, except Wake for many many years. They treated Carolina pretty bad and have treated Clemson pretty bad at times. I do disagree with him in that I think they would have been better off staying until they got a better offer instead of kind of wondering around as an independent for several years.

Now why he wanted to jump on me after I said some nice things about his school I don’t know. Guess he is just a butt hurt old man.
