Vince Dooley is the only reason we are in the SEC. We played UGA consistently in the 1970's and 1980's when we were an Independent. Dooley had a fondness for South Carolina and argued at the time that our state's culture and fan support made us an attractive candidate.

Recognizing that I don't have skin in this game but how can anyone argue that UofSC doesn't fit in the SEC.
Deep South location: check
Flagship state institution: check
Large university: check
Football crazy fan base: double check
Broad based athletic dept: check.
Huge football stadium: check
I mean what's the issue re their fitting in the SEC?

Most of you are probably too young or even know and I as only a kid when it happened but Carolina should have never left the ACC. They would be very competitive in football and I think had they stayed their basketball program would not have dropped off. Very good in basketball back in the day. Columbia SC is actually a pretty good basketball town for its size.Going independent those few years in football and the Metro for everything else really hurt them.

I think it's because if you take all of those positives you list, and realize they still suck to the degree they suck, you have to ask why.

5 bowl wins this decade. 15th most valuable college football program per Forbes. Two CWS titles this decade. A Final Four in men's basketball two years ago. A national title in women's basketball two years ago. We ain't the best, but you overestimate the degree to which we suck due to your orange colored glasses.

If the ACC won the next 140 straight football games versus the SEC they still would not get to .500

You see 5 bowl wins (shitty bowls at that) in 10 years as something to be excited about.
Mediocre recruiting.
Getting Ray's 4th or 5th choice for a HC.
Your fanbase is more concerned with winning the Palmetto Series and having Ray Tanner keep your geriatric boosters like Rooster think they're somebody than getting serious about football.

Question for you Carolina fans, I know this is off topic. Are you guys really upset that Ray Tanner is your A.D.? I talked to some fans that want him fired. I coached a kid in high school baseball named Dave Marchbanks that played there around 2001-2003 and had several interactions with the Tanner and I liked Tanner. I have a graduate degree from Clemson but I remember telling Marchbanks I would rather him play for Tanner than Jack Leggett. Why are people upset with him or is that just a few?

Where did I say I was happy? I'm not. You're the one who referenced the degree to which we suck. Our athletic department has had a good bit of success over the last decade. And we're not Clemson or Bama in football (no one is), but we're not a bottom feeder like Kansas or Rutgers. I don't think we're happy with it, but it's disingenuous of you to paint us as a bottom feeder.

I'm a Clemson fan. The team that just made the SEC's best team ever quit. I could care less about what the rest of the shitty teams in the ACC do.

I can deal with South Carolina based upon the region and culture. As for Mizzou - I am completely befuddled. Culture and region doesn't match, and they're freakin' YANKEES on top of that. Even the TAMU Aggies are a better fit!

He threatened to leave the university if we didn't hire him as AD. And he is completely unqualified for the job. David Marchbanks was a hell of a pitcher btw. You must be from the Mauldin/Simpsonville area.

...the ACC has been pondering that about Pickens Tater basketball since 1953. 0-59 in Chapel Hill
South Carolina was always a better fit culturally with the SEC. We just reunited with 10 members of our old family from the original Southern Conference in 1991 - but this time in the SEC.

yes
He's a great coach and should still be one.
Don't think he had the Resume to be AD and preferred (and still do) a guy with experience over him.
