So, why did the Iron Bowl take a 40 year break?

I've always found it bizarre that this series had such a long break. Especially when both the gumps and barn were SEC members for the last 10 years or so of the split. What caused that split? How were they even able to avoid each other while members of the SEC?

Yes, this is an off-season thread

IIRC it was over the player per diem or some other smallish thing.

a 34.00 difference in player per diem could not be resolved to everyones liking.

so Bama got more and Aubie didn't like that? Or was it the other way around?

Wouldn't an Ag know about dodging an instate rival?

Not to mention Auburn was kicking bama's tail during that time. Bama didn't take the lead in the series until Bear broke off 9 straight in the late 70s up until Bo showed up.

It was a beef over player per diems.....

There was a beef over the rules and refs. Remember that was the football pre-historic era, leather helmut days........

There was a beef over location of the game I think....

Stupid shite that no one alive today can even remember what they were arguing about.

From what I understand Alabama was pretty good in the 20's, 30's and 40's. Alabama probably wins 26 or 27 out of 40. Then Bama would have nearly a 20 game series lead.

Essentially Auburn was too poor to travel to Birmingham and asked for welfare to help them and Bama said no.

quote:

The University of Alabama is much closer to Birmingham than Auburn and Auburn officials demanded more per diem for the players. Auburn also wanted to allow more players to travel for the game and a different process for choosing the officials for the game. Alabama officials would not agree to any of Auburn’s demands and the series ended.

If you call winning 1 out of the previous 5 games before the break "kicking Bama's tail," sure. But overall I agree Auburn had uncharacteristically strong success against Bama in the early years. It's a shame they couldn't keep it up.
