I am saying it is up to the new employer. If the new employer wants you to start now, you start now if you want the job.
On the other hand, when you're hiring a highly sought-after coach, and he wants to coach the championship game, you wait for him if you want him to do the job.
In Kirby Smart's case, auburn decided they didn't want him badly enough, and Smart decided he didn't want to go badly enough. No big news, happens in negotiations all the time.

I think you may be right. And I think it may have to do with keeping our current recruiting class held together. Not any NCAA bullshite, that is a ridiculous line of thinking. A coach that went to the NCAA about his former school cheating would be done in coaching pretty much forever. The blackest of black lists.
Agree which is a stupid reason to hire someone. These kids that are good enough to make an impact will be there for three yrs only. Auburn needs to make a solid hire and give him 5 yrs or so to get his players in. You build for strength not immediate gratification.

bullshite. Successful football programs are run by one man, the head coach and it has always been that way. This is further evidence that the people at the top in Auburn still refuse to hand over control of the program and this will be their demise.
Smart was the perfect hire for Auburn and I am so glad that they fricked up this hire. Smart has way too much class to associate himself with that shithole. I am a firm believer that Pat Dye will have to die before it turns around at Auburn.
Should have never fired Tubberville. Tubbs is the best coach Auburn has ever had and they fired him because he refused to listen to a babbling drunk.
Auburn is in bad shape.
Meh. I don't really agree with any of that.
I can't blame Auburn for not wanting to wait until after the NC game to get their coach rebuilding the program.
And, I can't blame Smart for not leaving Bama until after the NC. If it were any other game than the NC, it would be different.
I also don't see Smart as some can't miss hire. You value him too highly.
Your post comes across as someone "hoping" for Auburn's demise.

You think the only people who are allowed transparency are successful people?
A couple of media guys made the point yesterday that coaches like Patterson and Peterson want offers from schools not request for interviews. Basically, their record is their interview an they're only willing to entertain serious offers. Smart does not have that type of clout as a DC that everyone thinks only does what Saban tells him to do

It's good business to ask questions when there have been third party inquiries. To blame him, when Auburn pursued him to begin with, is a little absurd. Taking someone at their word when an investigation is involved in any business just seems a little naive to me.
Questions are expected. Demanding full disclosure is unrealistic especially based on the substance of the allegations against Auburn. At worst Auburn would have secondary violations which is not worth turning down a Top 15 CFB job

yet malzahn is coaching HIS bowl game yet he was hired.
Again, has this been confirmed? As of his press conference last night, he said he didn't know if he was.

There is a ton of posts like that on this board.

I really don't know why that would have anything to do with it. If it does, you have bigger problems than you think. To hinge a coaching search on a handful of kids (because most will stay committed anyway) is just nuts.
quote:1000% this. Saban's first recruiting class was ok, but not up to today's standards. He picked the kids that fit his system though.

Malzahn said he did not know if ASU wanted him to coach the bowl game. That sounds like he will if his old school will let him.

Everyone says if it was Saban he would not let him coach in the BCSNC. Just last year he helped coach Mc, set him up an office just for his Colorado St. business he needed to conduct each day. If you really want someone you should not feel bad that they want to finish a job that they started.
McElwain was going to Colorado State
Kirby would have been going to Auburn.
One of these is not like the other.
Had he taken the job, I would have wanted Kirby out immediately. I'm sure he's a professional, but sometimes the appearance of a conflict of interest is enough.

Smart demanded from Auburn... 1. full disclosure of the state of the NCAA’s current look-see at the Auburn program, 2. full control of hiring and firing staffers...

The search committee did talk to Petrino on the phone Monday, but it wasn’t an interview. They never talked football.

I like the fact they trolled Petrino.

I love how so many UA fans are reacting to Scarbinsky's article like it's the sermon on the mount. I thought he was a hack, that only shilled for Auburn and hated Bama.

Well Pat Dye did say he wouldn't take 12 Sabans over Chizik. Smart works for Saban so that makes sense.

Any one of the things listed could've been a deal breaker. I like how a lot of them jump straight to the NCAA stuff, especially when Gus addressed that it shouldn't be a problem in his press conference.
Posted on 12/5/12 at 10:13 am to Smoke7024
The deal was dead as soon as Smart asked about the NCAA stuff. There is no way they're going to give any of that information to a Bama assistant before they signed him to a contract. Malzahn is probably aware of where things are because I'm sure he's involved in the investigation. Made the decision easy for them. Of course, the decision was based on the investigation and not on X's and O's, which dooms Auburn for the next decade.
The Aubs want a puppet, hardly looked beyond Malzahn. They almost certainly knew they'd hire Malzahn before they fired Chizik.

Absolutely. AU was smart to not hire a coach who knew about the NCAA allegations.
