So, it's not okay for the UNLV player to quit...BUT

When a coach like the Old Ball Sack, Steve Spurrier, quits on his team mid-season. He gets a pass?

or when Judas "Juice" Wells takes $$ and decides to not play for the last 10 games of the season...
nah both those situations (Juice and Spurrier) are messed up, the kid leaving UNLV for not getting what he was promised is more than okay. but make no mistake...spurrier did not get a pass. Carolina fans were pissed, the media trashed him. etc.

UNLV and the Sluka have no contract in which he has to play, nor any conditions on his NIL money should he choose not to.
This is why college football is a mess. It's not two entities negotiating and building a legal structure, it's a third-party and plausible deniability between the three.

A lot of people thought him quitting mid-season was shitty and they voiced their opinions.

To use a more apples-to-apples comparison, I remember many on this forum defending Fournette's decision to "opt out" of the latter half of LSU's season a few years back in order to protect his draft status. "It's a business decision," they said.

He opted out of one game, the bowl game
He played in the first three games, reinjured his ankle, missed the next four, played the next four, missed the final game. He didn’t “opt out of the latter half of the season”
None of that is apples to apples of a kid quitting after 4 games to preserve a redshirt because he didn’t get his NIL money. There actually isn’t a comparison. Nothing like this has ever happened before.

Well, that's just stupid of their collective. The NIL contracts should stipulate continued participation, as well as at least partial repayment of any up front money.

Do you know what was in Spurrier's contract? Did he have to compensate the school for games not coached? Or did he just not get paid for the remainder of his contract? I'm sure there was something in it to keep him from completely breaching it.
The problem I have with the kid quitting is, his beef wasn't with his team and University but whoever his NIL deal was with. And yet he quit on his team.

I don’t think they can. Pay for play is still prohibited. This whole “name, image, and likeness” madness all caught fire because of a damned video game.

Schools are given a compensation in the contracts most of the time. If they don't, it's because it's someone like Saban who can demand it not be there.
Schools are just out a player they likely based their entire team around(or at least their entire offseason/training) without any compensation. Basically the same effect as having a player injured and out for the season.

I haven’t heard that spurrier gained anything from leaving early, but him leaving early gave the team a window to look for another coach instead of having to do it quickly at the end of the season. My opinion is that if he was done he did them a favor by lighting a shuck instead of just riding it out.

That’s always been my take as well. They were also 0-4 in the conference when he hung it up. It’s not like he ruined their season by quitting when he did.

People quit and take their talents on the labor market all of the time. This market is like any other. It is not special or unique.

This is America. I am all about Capitalism and the free market. If the kid was promised money, and didn't get it in writing, sucks for him. If he can redshirt and get guaranteed NIL money next year somewhere else, good for him. Coaches have always been able to leave before the season is over. Players should be able to do the same.
