I don’t get the Greg Byrne hate unless he just can’t raise money.

Alabama has the best basketball program in the state because of his hire with the best coach in the state.
I know football is what matters but one bad hire and one great hire doesn’t get you fired. Especially when Saban is the one signing off on the football hire.

Byrne is responsible for the financial part of this mess. He hit a home run with Oats.

I get the financial part but there wasn’t a single successful coach coming in after Saban without an 80M buyout.

Following Saban was a death warrant for any coach. Nobody can follow that.

Alabama would probably take a risk on a young Saban assistant or Kirby assistant instead of going for a big name. If you hit big, you’ve got someone from the south that understands the south.

If you don’t….you don’t hit a huge buyout.

So Kiffen ?

The first problem is replacing the AD with someone who has a clue. The Deboer contract is Jimbo bad, and completely unnecessary.

The second problem is whats next? Saban aint walking back through that door

edit : ill fricking do it , pay me gumps

Talk of paying the buyout this year is insane.

DeBoer was a hot commodity when he was hired and wasn’t coming cheap.

Other option was to hire an up and coming guy for cheap but that is a lot bigger gamble.

Guy has won everywhere he has been so logic says you go get him.

It ain’t looking great so far but at least have to give him this year and next. Burning through coaches ain’t the best approach either as some teams around here will attest.

I don't blame the AD for the hire, its the contract.

Was doing a guarentee and locking Bama in necessary knowing * no one * could live up to the goat ?

financially you know whoever is next is at best a sacrificial lamb , you got to explore some options. higher base base, no guarentee ; go further down the list etc

this is A&M Jimbo level of fiduciary malpractice and its going to suck way worse for Bama than A&M oil tycoons

I'm sure paying out his assistants are probably a pretty penny too.

It is reportedly around $10.5/year, paid monthly for the next six years or so… They also then have to go get another coach. Any decent coach would be crazy to take that job after seeing how quickly they turned on DeBoer.

Crazy and will work for pussy!

LOL. No they don’t. They might be better than any program in the state of Arkansas at the moment, but Auburn’s is tops in the state of Alabama and has been for several years.

All this talk and melt about Bama they’re about to go 10-2 and make the playoffs

Or the 5-5 over their L10 games is indicative of who DeBoer is and they go 7-5. I’m just not sure which yet. Bama fans, does this team have any heart at all or are they indifferent and crumbling rest of year?

If you look at other buyouts, it isn’t out of line. According to an article from yesterday these are the highest current buyouts. Kirby Smart $118 millions. Lincoln Riley $90 million. Kalen Deboer $70 million. Steve Sarkisian $64 million. Mike Norvell $63 million. Brian Kelly $62 million. Mario Cristobal $61 million. Dabo Swinney $60 million. James Franklin $57 million. Matt Rhule $56 million.

It is more of an indictment of college football. And earlier today people were arguing the SEC couldn’t afford full time referees.

So they are looking at another high salary with another guaranteed buyout

Doubtfull. They're in 'up and comer' land now. It'll be a Dooley, then a Butch Jones, etc.

UT fans are loving watching the decline.

Reality is DeBoer is getting 3 years minimum barring a sub-.500 record with a roster not built on transfers like 2024 FSU.

Alabama may not be one of their mid-2010s teams but this roster is generally considered to be one of the more talented in the nation. If they can’t manage 8-4 to 10-2 it makes you question the recruiting services or the coaching/player development.

However, if they completely flat line it is pretty clearly a coaching problem not roster problem. I’m not talking 6-6 or 7-5. I’m talking something like 2-10 to 5-7 range. That is clearly a massive underachievement for a highly paid staff. At that juncture you got to have a lot of confidence to keep the head coach.

I'll take the position for 10 million/6 year contract. It's a bargain. I'll lean into the softness of their team culture and guarantee at least 3 wins a year.
