So has Auburn hired Cristobal, and now the Pac-12 title game has them waiting to announce?

Here are some things we know:

> Rumors were swirling last week that a decision had been made regarding Gus after the Texas A&M game (partly because of the South Carolina game), and that the results of the final weekend didn't matter

> As predicted, Gus was fired on December 13 after a Mississippi State win, only three days before National Signing Day on December 16, and despite the potential for a reduced buyout had they waited

> In the middle of this timeline, on December 14, the Pac-12 announces the decision to replace Washington with Oregon as the team to face USC in the Championship Game scheduled for December 18

Taking this information into account, one could argue that Auburn was prepared to quickly part ways with Gus with the knowledge that they already had Cristobal in-hand, and wanted to make an immediate splash before signing day.

The Pac-12 Championship announcement popped at the worst possible time, thereby delaying their plans or any announcements to that effect until after the game this weekend.

If this is true, the Steele rumors could just be a smokescreen as suggested, or an attempt to follow hiring procedures by going through a formal search process.

The only part of this that doesn't fit is Cristobal's comments last night refuting that he had been contacted, but this could of course just be obfuscation on his part.

What do ya'll think? Is it, and has it always been Cristobal? To me, this is the only way that any of this makes logical sense.

Or is none of this true, and Auburn is really just doing Auburn things?

How about none of the above. I think he's trying to get a better deal from O and Auburn is a tool of convenience for him.

If news has not broken by late tonight that a contract has been signed, then I think more is happening behind the scenes

I dont know why Cristobal would not sign a contract prior to signing day if they wanted him to stay

I don't see how Oregon suddenly finding themselves in a game they didn't expect to play in is going to cause a nearly week long delay in the announcement of a coaching hire if both sides had already agreed in principle as early as Sunday. There's no real benefit to it for either Auburn or Cristobal.

Cristobal is out, and is staying at Oregon. Steele was the choice all along and will be the HC at AU. Sarkesian is still possible, but not as likely now as it was. Strange days

Remember this point.

Cristobal did not sign an extension leading up to early signing day.

A coach “in it for the long haul” would have forced the admin to get a deal done before early signing period to prevent negative recruiting against him.

I hope Auburn hires Super Mario. He was known as a great recruiter, but a average on the field coach at Bama.

Plus, Saban's former assistants don't beat Saban. Bama about to go on a long win streak over Auburn.

The Aubbie beat writer was on Finebaum & he said that there is a lot of the money men are feeling Cristobal is simply using AU as leverage for more money from Oregon. He also said that Steel has BEEN working hard to build relationships with all the prominent boosters.

I don’t know why I keep seeing this and crazy things like “Auburn would have saved 7 million if they waited a week”. This stuff isn’t true. The buyout (which was a ridiculous arrangement) is 75% of the his remaining contract.
