The 90’s were a terrible decade for OU. All 3 of losing seasons came in 96, 97, and 98. Stoops turned it around quickly in 99.

That was a fast turnaround. What was the fans initial thoughts of Stoops when he was hired?

We didn't know much about who he even was but we were hopeful. We knew he was on staff with Spurrier and produced some great defenses down in Gainesville so it seemed we were at least on the right track.

Imagine being the fan of a team that for 45 of the past 50 football seasons they had a losing record.

I haven't seen one legit Texas fan say this.

Hope to feed'em enough till their guts split wide open.
I do wonder if there is some kind of a curse on us.

Hey Aubie. Imagine being a fan of a school
like Vandy. A school with incredible prestige, top academics, and classy people. A school that doesn’t have the NCAA practically camped on the lawn. Can’t imagine it ? Of course you can’t.

Yeah, we really need to end that TSIO.

Excitement for me. I assumed it couldn't get any worse than Blake. Even his first 7-5 season gave us a lot of hope. Stoops beat A&M 51-6 his first year.

Can we just pretend the last 6-7 years didn't happen for the hogs?
Only if we can also pretend that 1980-2005 didn't happen for Mizzou.

Were those the years Alabama was on probation?
Not all of them…84 second season under Ray Perkins. 1997 probably had to do with scholarship reduction, but Mike DuBose in his first season in a position he didn’t belong in. 2000 Mike DuBose just lost the team. 2003 was Shula’s first year. He came in after the Franchione exit and Mike Price debacle. The sanctions handed down from DuBose’ bullshite were pretty bad, but the actions proved Franchione had no chest to go with his moobs. 2006 Mike Shula had a young team and not the experience to work through it.
Shula was a very good ambassador for the university and took the job at a time when almost no one else would have. For those reasons, I don’t disparage him. Honestly, he makes a very good qb coach but that’s probably his ceiling as qb/oc type.
We’d probably have been better to bring Stallings back in 03 so a proper coaching search could be done. I understand he offered just such but I don’t know. All in all, things worked out well in the end. Saban came and on top of that told the big boosters his job was to run the program and their job is to write checks to the university.
