Our kicker is 6 for 6 from 40 yds and in. By the time they "let us score" it would have been not much more than an XP.

I think forcing our jittery kicker to make a game winning kick (something he’s never done) on the road in a hostile environment would have been a much wiser decision, given USCe’s offensive woes.

But hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

Our kicker is 100% inside the 40.

Wasn’t there an NFL playoff game that this strategy worked? I may be remembering something that didn’t happen.

What was bad was Jesse Palmer completely whiffed on the commentary. Instead of having the discussion we're having in this thread, he implied that Germie Bernard was stupid for not stepping out at the 10 yard line which would have been completely insane. You either score the TD or you step out at the 1 yard line.

Jesse said the game would have been over if he stepped out at the 10 almost like he didn't even know what the score was.

Yep, it was a bad look. I’m surprised it isn’t being mocked more. I was laughing so hard

I mean, if this is your plan, you gotta do better than returning the kickoff to the 9, throwing the first pass short and not getting out of bounds, then getting sacked to end the game. If you let the other team score, you ought to at least have something creative or ambitious planned. South Carolina seemed like they only gave it half a try at best. Which, if that’s the case, make the other team make the field goal.

It's the "right" call IMO. But it's really a no-win situation from the start. No matter what they did it would have taken a miracle.

He goes out of bounds, Alabama still has multiple timeouts and like 40 seconds to work with. They'll just run the clock down and kick the FG at the end, IF they don't score a TD anyway which would be the same result with even less time to work with.

You could hope for an Alabama mistake. Missing the FG, fumble, interception, etc.

But it went bad for South Carolina right away. The decision for the guy to bring the ball out from the end zone like that pretty much ruined any decent chance USC had. That really sealed it. If he downs it, then it's out at the 25, which is much more manageable.

At the other end, Jesse Palmer was trying to say he should have stepped out of bounds on his own. And I disagree with that. Take the points when you can IMO.

There is no right answer there given the time left. Personally, I was glad we scored the TD with 30 seconds left, Carolina having no timeouts and their offense in general. Talty has been very good inside 40 yards, but give me a 7 pt lead with 30 seconds left and the other team 75 yards away vs the mechanics of making a 20-30 yard kick as time expires.

I 100% agree with Germie trying to score and not going down. As someone noted, it’s quite a coincidence as Germie scored when going down would have ended the game last year - but we had the lead there.

All that means is that it was a day of the week with "day" in it.

Check back when he says something intelligent. Don't hold your breath.

You could make a reasonable case for stepping out at the 1, but Jesse was arguing he should have stepped out at the 10 after he picked up the first down. Why make the FG try 10 yards longer than it needs to be? He also failed to even mention the fact that the DB for SC let him score which was kind of an important detail at the time.

I keep reading about Talty being shaky. He hasn’t missed inside the 40 all year. They were probably looking at a 27 yarder or so. I don’t know if Beamer made the right call but no way can it be assumed he misses.

This thread makes it clear how badly this site wanted SC to pull it off

I’m personally more confident in Bama kicker missing than Sellers driving the length of the field for a TD

Highest pressure situation he'd have faced all year, so we can't be sure how he would have fared.

I think everyone can't get his horrible miss against UGA out of their heads, when I believe he just simply slipped before the kick.

Still, we're all thankful it didn't come down to him no matter how you feel about Talty.

Obviously Beamer was afraid of his own brand of ball. What a fraud.

He hasn’t watched our FG kicker

More than likely he HAS watched our kicker and saw he's perfect for his entire career (36 for 36 including PATs IIRC) inside of 40 yards.

The guy that let him score could have pushed him out at the 11. It was first down, there was plenty of time on the clock.

Bama would have centered the ball, ran the clock down to a couple of seconds, and have a guy that's perfect for life from that range with a 28 yard attempt.

The odds of breaking a long kick return or Bama having a prevent defense cover bust aren't great but they're better than relying on a bad snap.

with a minute left, maybe. 35 seconds?
No way. Combined odds of Blocking a kick or a missed field way better than going 75 yds for a TD with mo timeouts and a D youve onky scored 22 on the whole game.
