The 2nd base runner probably thought the pitcher was going to first with it, and was probably just hoping for an overthrow.

I'll add that the backstop at Hoover is pretty freaking deep.... if there is one park you don't want have a wild pitch or pass ball OR brain fart air mail throw when you have an easy out at first - it's Hoover.
