With this weekends 1/2 matchup, here are the matchups that current SEC members have been involved in....
2016: #1 Kansas 109 #2 Oklahoma 106 (OT)
2013: #1 Kentucky 74 #2 Michigan State 78
2008: #1 Memphis 62 #2 Tennessee 66
2005: #1 Duke 97 #2 Texas 66
1991: #1 UNLV 112 #2 Arkansas 105
1990: #1 Kansas 71 #2 Missouri 77
1981: #1 North Carolina 82 #2 Kentucky 69
1954: #1 Kentucky 70 #2 Utah 65
1951: #1 Kentucky 81 #2 St. John's 40
Overall, regular season matchups of #1 vs. #2 teams have been very rare. This will mark just the 23rd time that #1 vs. #2 have played in the regular season since the AP basketball poll began in the 1948-49 season.
The game this weekend reminded me of the Arkansas/UNLV matchup. In 1991, that game was the game of the year. Complete with full CBS personalities in Barnhill for a pre-game show. Watching it also reminded me of how basketball was pure. No piped in music during introductions...just the band and a raucous crowd.

I miss the days of seeing college rosters littered with NBA talented upperclassmen.

Nolan Richardson says that was his best Arkansas team. Too bad UNLV had maybe the best all-time team that year.

The UNLV v Ark was a great game.
To show how much the game has changed, at the video’s 12:07 mark Augmon gets called for a travel that would be called every possession in today’s game.
Love these older videos, Nantz doesn’t even look like he’s old enough to shave.

Not a homer but UF vs OSU 06 or 07 may have been.
Edit:
Nvm. Looks like 1vs3

UNLV had some grown men, we didn’t.

Thanks for the blast from the past UNLV vid.
When I think of Bama and how fast their offense moves, I cant help but think of Tarkanian's rebels.
It was a different kind of offense for sure, but still very fast paced.

And a cantankerous a-hole that gave the NCAA hell before it was cool biting towels at courtside.
RIP Tark.

"You need to get you some mens," as Larry Johnson said to Coach Richardson.

I remember that game at the Phogg. I thought we would finally win one there. Buddy Hield put on a show, but it wasnt enough.

Stacey Augmon, I believe, running past Noland, “You’re gonna need some bigger men, Coach.”
Nolan agreed.
That’s the story….;)

That's your list...and even including Mizzou felt gross.

It's really surprising that there have been so few AP #1 vs #2 regular matchups.
You would think there would have been some more in all the early season tournaments like Maui etc.
I guess it's only recently due to the NCAA tournament selection committee shifting value to playing tough opponents that most teams didn't schedule almost all rent a wins early.

I distinctly remember watching a good bit of that 1991 Arkansas/UNLV game in the old Barnhill Arena.
Not to downplay the talent on this year's Alabama and Auburn teams but neither team has the depth of 1st round talent that that 1991 UNLV/Arkansas game had.
That UNLV team that beat Duke in the 1991 national title game is the most talented college basketball team in my lifetime. That 1991 season was also in the early part of an elite run by Arkansas throughout much of the 90s. There were many more 1st rounders on the floor in that 1991 game than there will be in Saturday's game.
Philon (mid 1st round) and Broome (late 1st round) are the only two likely 1st rounders at this point with Sears possibly sneaking into the very end of 2nd Round. Pettiford is an eventual 1st round pick as well imo.
A game that would be fascinating to watch is this Alabama team against the 89/90 Bo Kimble/Hank Gathers led Loyola Marymount team. Final score would be something like 130 to 127

It was Larry Johnson. Man, that team was loaded. Augmon, Hunt, Anthony, Johnson.
I was in Barnhill that day. A couple of hours after the game, I spotted a charter bus parked at a KFC. Pulled over and, soon, out comes the UNLV team to load up. Drake Field was covered up with private jets. It was a madhouse.
Great time.
