They were 5th in a 4 team playoff last year. 5th gets them a first round home game this year.

ETA- And Georgia was 6th last year heading into the bowls.

I assume its because you have Bama, tu, UT, & Ole Miss left on the schedule. You can afford to drop 2 of them and still make the playoffs and win a title.
