I second this. I lived in Louisiana for over 25 years and never heard an exchange like this even once.
and when I say I want a coke, it's because I'll be drinking a mfing coke

so when they asked what you want, why not just tell them what you want
Because I grew up in a household in which a coke referred to a carbonated beverage. After about 8, it finally clicked but doesn't change the fact that as a young child, I'd get pissed when they wouldn't ask what kind of coke I wanted.

This is sad. Even for the offseason.

I agree generally. That restaurant example never ever happens.
I will tell my GF "get some coke" fully understanding she'll probably come back with Dr. Pepper. So in that sense it might be true. For me personally, I generically refer to soft drinks as "drinks" more often than "coke," but I probably do say Coke when I mean a variety of soft drinks.

Sorry in advance to derail this thread cnb.
But this whole "thing" has really started to irritate me the last few years. I've lived in the heart of the deep south my entire life. Not one got damn time in my existence have I ever heard an exchange like "what will you have?" "coke" "what kind of coke?" "dr pepper"
It pisses me off when facebook, buzzfeed, and the like always have these stupid lists like "U know Ur in THE SOUTH when...LOL" and it's always on there "We call everything a coke no matter what yall!"

ehhh I don't totally agree. Most people if they are at a service restaraunt will say "I will have a coke" the server may say "is Pepsi alright?" which in turn the person used "coke" to mean a cola which means Pepsi is fine.
Other times if you are in a "self serve" restaraunt coke is normally used to say you want a soft drink cup.
In NOLA I thought a place was a self serve setup so I said "I will have a coke" saw her go over and about to pour a coke when I had to stop her to say "sorry, I would like a diet coke"

Yeah people referred to sodas as coke my whole life. I think you are looking at it wrong. Youu wouldn't tell a waiter I want a coke then he or she ask what kind of coke. It was used more vaguely than that. Like if your friend asked do you want to go to the store and get a coke. You might get mountain dew or sprite but we always said do you wanna go get a coke.

I swore I would never be a "pop" person. However, 10 years in Kansas has run it's course. It's fun trying to explain to people here that "a coke" could mean any kind of soda pop.

I agree. It's crazy. There is just a preference to coke.
I hear cold drink as a general thing to mean a soda.

That a good explanation. In middle school we had a "Michigan Yank" move in. At a basketball game one night I asked him if he wanted to go get a coke, and he said no. I came back with a Mellow Yello, and he was like I thought you were getting a coke. I explained the whole we call all soft drinks cokes unless specifically ordering one. He also used pop, you guys, and other typical Yankee linguistics.
