Well I find that hilarious. If you want a Dr. Pepper and you ask someone for a coke I dont know what to say about you. Just like up north if you want a Dr. P you will ask for it directly, not ask for a pop in this scenario

It's more of a general statement like asking someone if they want juice or water and if they say juice, you ask what kind of juice.

When I was living in Michigan, people said 'pop'. After the Internet made the whole "What word do people in various parts of the country use?" well-known, people asked me if I said 'coke' for every soft drink. My response was "frick no. If I want a soda, I ask for a soda. If the person asks what kind and gives me a list, I choose a brand. How fricking stupid do you think Southerners are?" I may have left off that last part, but I think the myth has spread precisely because people want to think Southerners are too stupid to differentiate between "Coke" and other soft drinks.

Saying coke as a general term makes a person sound dumb. If I put a four drinks out and they are beer, wine, vodka, whiskey, etc. General term would be alcohol.

Now if I put a Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Sprite, Mountain Dew, Fanta, etc and ask what are those called. I hope people don't use "coke" as a general/generic term to describe ALL those drinks. I laugh if you call all of those a "coke". That's what the "generic" term comes in. What would you call all of those drinks.....is it pop, soda, soft drink, cold drink. Nobody asking you to get a "Coke" or what is your favorite drink. Maybe southerners thought the survey asked what is your favorite soft drink.lmao. They are asking what do you call a group of carbonated beverage or "soft drink" in a general sense.

When you ask someone do they want a coke, they think you mean actual coca cola. You would tell them specifically Dr. Pepper if that is what you had.

from Louisiana and it is very common for people to use coke to refer to all sodas. As in "what kind of coke should I get for the party? Dr. Pepper, sprite, coke." Or "you want a coke? Yea what kind do you have? I have sprite and pepsi."

. You have never heard this

Myself and everyone I knew growing up say "pop". That's definitely what it's called in the western half of Missouri.

True. Now a lot of people's favorite drink in this area is a Coca Cola "coke" but they don't call every soft drink a damn coke.lol. In this area Coke is the main sponser for drinks served at high school/college sporting events, casinos etc. Even have a Coke distribution center in Joplin.

they sho do love some coke in southern missourah

Yall are over thinking this. Coke is just used as a generic term in certain situations and sentences that just make sense. I'm from South LA and there's plenty of terms that are used or said incorrect, might be just regional, but whether educated or not it just makes sense.

Would you do the same thing if they asked what brand of Kleenex you wanted? Or Formica? It's really not at all unusual for a brand name to come to refer to a type of product.

The official soft drink of Louisiana is Bud Light.

What has happened to the fact checking on this board?
