I hate these threads. They always devolve into a pissing match between knuckleheads who never went to school at their fanboy institutions. Oh and queue the UGA fan fricksticks with the sad trope about everybody in the world wants to attend UGA and every other school is a back up plan. So fricking stupid.

Congratulation, we detect that you have a pulse and therefore we invite you to matriculate at the University of Mississippi.
Academic requirements are set by the state.....not OM.

The Ole Miss acceptance rate is due to the Ayers Case. Ole Miss can't do anything about it.

Disagree. As someone that’s filtered thru resumes, narrowed down candidates, and held interviews it is a factor.

In MOST fields, if your degree isn't from Vandy, MIT, an Ivy League school, or the like, most places won't give a shite what the name of the university is on your degree.
Let me add on to what I've already said. I do agree with you and I've been saying that for a long time. Nationally, you've hit the nail square on the head. In the state of Texas however, the Aggie connection is very real. If you have a degree from A&M it can be a huge advantage point and even our biggest rivals will agree.

Makes sense. Going to Mizzou, you learn very quickly that undergrad studies are not a remote priority there. Glad I went, but the sciences were much more “sink or swim” than hands on instruction. Also half the applied science kids in the state go to the Rolla campus.

I said it just now but this is only the case within the state. Nationally an Aggie degree doesn't move the needle more than any other unless the guy looking at the resume is an Aggie

the Aggie connection is very real
In my expierance, the only time where your degree is from matters is for entry level positions, and it doesn't matter if that degree is from Vandy, Cal, or an Ivy League. We all understand there is very little difference between those top tier schools, so a Compter Science degree from say Georgia Tech means more than one from Georgia Southern, but it isn't like anyone is pulling up the Princeton Review to see if Vanderbilt had a higher rating than Washington University in St. Louis when comparing applicants.
And after you have 5+ years expierance, we don't care if your degree is from MIT or ITT Tech, your work history means everything.

No. Nepotism is when you hire a family member or close friend over a more qualified applicant.
What you stated is called "networking".

Why should we take these rankings seriously?
No one does other than admissions departments. There are maybe 5 schools that will universally turn heads with employers (and others that are field-dependent), but the rest depends on where you went and where you're trying to get a job.
No one in Birmingham gives two shits that you went to #28 UC-Davis over Alabama or Auburn

Auburn has the best PR department in the entire universe for this number to continue to be quoted.
so you claim Auburn lies about this?

The demand for an Auburn degree has never been greater, with the university recently topping 55,000 first-year student applications for fall 2024 — yet another all-time high.
The record number of applications for the fall semester is a 14% increase from fall 2023 — when the university experienced a previous record of 48,000 first-year student applications.
“It is exciting to once again see so many students demonstrating a strong interest in joining the Auburn Family,” said Joffery Gaymon, Auburn’s vice president for enrollment. “As we focus on efforts of greater access to underserved areas, we are working hard to build connections and further grow our applicant numbers.”
Among the more than 55,000 applications received for fall 2024, the applicant pool included more than 12,000 Alabama residents, with representation from every county in the state and all states in the nation. All totaled, 39% of applicants secured admissions, with 34% hailing from Alabama. Additionally, 25% of the admitted students were from an underrepresented background, further emphasizing the university’s dedication to access.

What keeps getting missed is that those initial jobs are setting people up for the rest of their careers.
People won't care about your degree that much 5+ years into your career, BUUUUTTTT they will care about your 5+ years of experience, and that experience is generally better when you go to solidly ranked schools with tons of state connections and internships.

There is no criteria for this. They rate State at the bottom but what is the basis for that?
State has a first class Engineering program that covers numerous areas, a Great Vet School, an excellent Architecture School, tremendous Foresty, Agriculture, Horticulture programs along with your obligatory Education, Business, Accounting etc. programs.
So what the grad does post school is what is important. I am not saying we are better than the other SEC schools but at the very least we turn great productive adults like other conference schools do.
