The tailgating must have been off the charts insane.

Tailgating wasn't that crazy back then. If that happened in 2015 the scene would look like the aftermath of Bonnaroo.
Also, Veterans Memorial Stadium is where this happened. A backup named Tim Ellis beat Joe Montana's Fighting Irish.

I remember you could buy the double header tickets at Jitney Jungle for $20.

These were great days. Dont remember LSU being involved but we did have a double dip with Ole Miss and State and would return the favor in Jackson. Alabama didn't visit Oxford until 1994 believe it or not. It was always in Jackson.
I remember the PAC8 challenge thingy. Oregon State and Auburn and we played Steve Bartkowski and Chuck Muncie led Cal and I think it was 66-0.
I'm older and can say that I miss Legion tremendously. What some great memories there and there was a piece of the Iron Bowl that died when it moved to the campuses. I understand why they did because millions could be made but that was an un-rivaled event at Legion every year.

I miss Alabama playing in Birmingham in general. They might not ever do it again unless forced to but I hope to see again one day

I did one doubleheader in Bham when I was a senior in high school (19668 fball season). LSU-bama at 1pm and Tennessee-AU at night. Weather was HORRIBLE, mid 30s and light rain. LSU lost 7-16 and we left the AU-Tenn game early as we were too cold.
Was in Jackson for more than one of those doubleheaders but only stayed at night for bama-State one time. Early 70s, maybe 71.

Was this on the same day? I can't imagine Bama playing two games in one day. This isn't the 1910s

There would be a body count if that took place today.

My god how many drunken brawls at that one, especially since Tennessee fans could arrive early and pester Bama fans during their game, Bama fans would stay after to watch Tennessee-Auburn and taunt whoever lost while whoever won still hates Bama enough to take sides against them? What a glorious mess. So many possibilities.

quote:Me too! And you're right about the IB...to have that stadium basically split down the middle with UA/AU folks cheering was simply amazing to behold!

My dad went to one of those. I think it was the one in Jackson.

When I was 15/16/17/18 in 68,69,70,71,etc., I went to the Jackson doubleheader every year. We would get about 4 guys from Bastrop in NE La. and drive over for the day. I was LSU of course, liked State, but hated Ole Miss and Bama. One year I saw Archie Manning play with a broken arm and one year,I saw MSU play with a Smith as State's QB. Years later, my son married Smith's daughter over in Ms.. True story. I loved that game and hated that it stopped. They only quit it because the other teams wanted home campus games for the money it produced. LSU had to travel to Jackson anyway. I miss it.

Jackson was a good town back then.

Went to many in Jackson; my dad went to many in B'ham & Jackson.
In retrospect, we should've kept one of these doubleheaders in Jackson a year: State, UM & USM, too...
